UPMC Works with Oracle and Cerner to Provide Clinicians with Continuous Access to Patient Health Records

Recognizing the need for doctors, nurses, and clinicians to have access to the most up-to-date patient healthcare information to drive the quality of care, UPMC, a national leader in the use of electronic medical records (EMRs), announced today a newly-implemented system that uses Oracle GoldenGate and Cerner’s 724Access® software to ensure clinicians have around-the-clock access to electronic patient data whenever they need it, even during system downtime.

In this joint effort, UPMC integrated Oracle’s GoldenGate solution with its databases, enabling 24×7 access to its EMR applications.  In the case of a planned, or unplanned system outage, Oracle and Cerner have reduced potential downtime for UPMC’s eRecord system from hours – which is typical in the industry – to minutes, with a real-time stand-by database.  With this achievement, UPMC – a global health network of over 50,000 employees – has become one of the largest Oracle/Cerner clients of this scope to develop such a capability.

Oracle GoldenGate and Cerner’s 724Access Deliver Business Continuity for Cerner’s Clinical Applications

Redwood Shores, CA – June 28, 2011

News Facts
•       To enhance the quality and safety of patient care, UPMC, a national leader in the use of electronic medical records (EMRs), has implemented a system that uses Oracle GoldenGate and Cerner’s 724Access® software to ensure that its clinicians have continuous, secure access to the most up-to-date patient and order data.
•       UPMC, Oracle and Cerner have integrated Oracle GoldenGate with Cerner’s 724Access software to help reduce potential downtime for UPMC’s eRecord system from hours, which is typical in the industry, to minutes. With its dramatic reduction in downtime and potential reliance on paper backup systems, UPMC is one of the largest Cerner clients of this size and scope to develop such a capability.
•       UPMC is a $9 billion global health enterprise with 50,000 employees and a diverse health care network that includes more than 20 hospitals, 400 doctors’ offices and outpatient sites, a health insurance services division, and international and commercial services.
•       As part of its adoption of EMRs, UPMC has deployed 14 Cerner Millennium® applications across its hospitals, including Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) and PowerChart®, which provide a comprehensive electronic medical record of each patient.
•       To enable business continuity, UPMC chose Oracle GoldenGate and Cerner’s 724Access solution to provide a high availability EMR solution with 24×7, read-only access to its Cerner® applications.
•       UPMC implemented Oracle GoldenGate to replicate all patient data from its Cerner applications running on Oracle Database in real-time to a standby Oracle Database for immediate switchover. The source Oracle Database contains 17 Terabytes of data and supports 4,500 concurrent users (clinicians) and more than 850,000 interactions each day.
•       Oracle GoldenGate synchronizes the production and standby databases with only sub-second latency and enables physicians and staff to continue to view patient data and orders during any planned or unplanned outage.
•       Cerner’s 724Access solution with Oracle GoldenGate enables UPMC to activate the standby database in just 12 minutes with data current from that point on. Previously, it took nearly two hours to activate the instance.

•       “It’s critical that our doctors, nurses and clinicians have access to the most up-to-date patient healthcare information at their fingertips to help ensure that our patients have the best healthcare experience,” said William Costantini, Associate Director, Integrated Operations Center, UPMC. “By developing a system that incorporates Oracle GoldenGate, we have enabled our clinicians to have virtually 24×7 access to electronic patient data whenever they need it, even when the system is down. This capability is rare in our industry and critical to our goal of providing patient-centered care with the help of smart technology.”
•       “Electronic medical records have the power to transform healthcare delivery,” said Marc Perlman, global vice president, Healthcare and Life Sciences, Oracle. “They must, however, be available when and where they are needed. Downtime is not acceptable, especially when it affects patient care. With Oracle GoldenGate, UPMC can ensure high availability of patients’ medical records, even during unplanned outages.”
•       “This joint effort with Oracle and UPMC demonstrates the importance of collaboration to successfully support health care demands and ultimately make health care safer,” said Mike Nill, Cerner COO.

Imprivata Announces New Products and Strategic Partnerships at HIMSS11

Company’s No Click AccessTM Innovations in Virtualization, Mobility and Clinician Workflow Enable Electronic Medical Records Adoption and Faster Path to Meaningful Use

HIMSS 2011
Booth #3872

ORLANDO, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Today at HIMSS11, Imprivata, the #1 independent single sign-on and access management provider for healthcare and other regulated industries, announced a host of new products and industry partnerships. Designed to accelerate the adoption of electronic medical records (EMR) applications and help healthcare providers achieve Meaningful Use, Imprivata is delivering products and partnerships across three key strategic areas: virtualization, mobility and clinician workflow.

“Our customers demand fast and secure access to EMR applications – it’s what drives our commitment to No Click Access and number one KLAS-rated products,” said Omar Hussain, president and CEO, Imprivata. “These new products and partnerships build on our mission to help physicians spend more time with patients and deliver quality care, by reducing the time it takes for them to get the right information at the right time, regardless of location.”

Virtualization Partnerships

Single sign-on and strong authentication on zero clients for VMware ViewTM. An increasing number of healthcare IT organizations are looking to deploy VMware View and zero clients to secure their data and reduce their desktop management headaches. Imprivata and Teradici announced today that they are working together as part of a strategic partnership to provide integration and interoperability of PC-over-IP® (PCoIP®) zero client devices with Imprivata OneSign® authentication and single sign-on software. The joint solution will enable healthcare providers to deploy VMware View™ virtual desktops with secure and rich-media hardware zero clients that provide clinicians with one-touch desktop roaming and strong authentication.

Imprivata OneSign Integration with Dell’s Mobile Clinical Computing Platform. Imprivata announced last week that Imprivata OneSign Virtual Desktop Access™ will be integrated with Dell’s Mobile Clinical Computing platform for Dell healthcare customers using VMware View. This furthers Imprivata’s commitment to helping clinicians get fast access to patient data in virtual desktop environments.

Mobility Innovation

As clinicians increasingly demand the use of mobile devices such as iPads and smartphones, secure access for these devices has emerged as a key challenge for healthcare IT executives. In response, Imprivata has introduced OneSign AnywhereTM, designed specifically to enable single sign-on and authentication to EMR and other healthcare applications from any location and any device. Through OneSign Anywhere, Imprivata is providing clinicians anywhere, anytime access to critical patient information, thereby enabling timely patient care decisions.

Clinician Workflow Innovation

Imprivata announced today integration of Imprivata OneSign, the company’s #1 KLAS-rated single sign-on and authentication software, with Epic’s authentication API. This API-level integration with EpicCareTM speeds clinician access, streamlines workflow and simplifies compliance with Meaningful Use requirements for Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE).

“Over 700 hospitals and 1.2 million clinicians worldwide rely on Imprivata each day for No Click Access to their EMR applications,” said Ed Gaudet, Chief Marketing Officer at Imprivata. “As CIOs continue to innovate their hospital’s infrastructure using virtualization and mobility technologies, and drive productivity gains by improving clinician workflows, Imprivata will continue to deliver industry-leading solutions for virtual desktops, mobile devices such as the iPad and EMR applications from companies such as Epic Systems.”

Imprivata will be exhibiting these products at HIMSS11 today through February 24 at booth #3872. The Company will also feature live customer presentations from Catholic Health Partners, Liverpool Women’s and Alder Hey Children’s NHS Trusts and Memorial Healthcare that highlight how Imprivata has helped their organization with EMR adoption and their respective successes using virtualization, mobility and clinician workflow technologies. More information and a schedule for these presentations is available here.

ImplementHIT Launches OptimizeHIT at HIMSS to Boost Physician EHR Training and Meaningful Use for Small Practices

Brings cost-effective, customizable physician elearning to smaller practices

Orlando, FL—February 21, 2011—ImplementHIT will roll out OptimizeHIT, ( physician electronic health record (EHR) elearning solutions, at HIMSS 2011 in Orlando, FL, February 20-24 in booth 3385. This new patent-pending solution will deliver bold new functionality scaled to small physician practices with 20 doctors or fewer, empowering them to achieve meaningful use of qualified EHRs. ImplementHIT is the developer of sophisticated, physician-friendly, dynamic education products and services to help hospitals and physician practices drive organization-wide adoption of EHRs.

This solution designed specifically for smaller practices builds on ImplementHIT’s unsurpassed qualifications in physician online learning. ImplementHIT has helped hospitals including St.Vincent Health, North-Shore Long Island Health System (the largest EHR implementation in New York), Columbia University, and many more, drive clinical adoption of their EHRs through customized strategies including training.

The training technology of OptimizeHIT drives adoption of even advanced EHR functionality, while preventing lost productivity during implementation and beyond. It’s based on ImplementHIT’s successful training platform used with hospitals and larger organizations, but priced especially for smaller physician practices. With high level guidance from ImplementHIT’s EHR training experts, practices can leverage in-house resources to fully customize training content to their actual practice scenarios. This more meaningful training approach is necessary for effective physician participation and engagement. Based on low levels of industry-wide adoption, this has been a challenge for EHR vendors.

OptimizeHIT is powered by ImplementHIT’s patent‐pending Advanced Training Portal, which connects providers, support personnel and management in real time, and delivers objective data to evaluate the success of the implementation. Because small physician practices experience significant demands with their EHRs, their physician proficiency levels often plateau at the basic or intermediate level. To achieve meaningful use and receive federal HITECH funding, providers using certified EHRs will have to become proficient with the advanced features of the EHR that even large organizations with entire training departments struggle to achieve. OptimizeHIT was designed to help smaller practices with the fundamentals, as well as to drive clinical adoption of EHRs into advanced functionality.

Because OptimizeHIT is web-based, physicians and clinical staff access the elearning at a time and location most convenient for them. “Doctors can participate from home, at their leisure. For the providers, that’s one of the absolute best benefits,” said Jim Garrity, chief information officer, Tucson Orthopaedic Institute (TOI). “They are seeing value in the education. Coupled with the cost effectiveness of the online learning, this is putting TOI on track to save hundreds of hours of training time for providers alone,” he said. TOI uses ImplementHIT’s fully customized training solution, which is also available to larger physician practices and hospitals.

“The technology used in OptimizeHIT is based on years of research on educating physicians to train more effectively online. Through our vast experience with larger organizations, our software not only drives EMR adoption, it protects physician productivity. Smaller practices have a smaller cushion for lost productivity during implementation, making OptimizeHIT a vital tool,” said Dr. Andres Jimenez, CEO, ImplementHIT.

“The biggest impediment to meaningful use is meaningful education. We see evidence of that in the very small percentage of hospitals and practices using the advanced features of their EMR, like computerized physician order entry (CPOE) with problem based order sets, electronic charge submission and prescription transmission. These features are critical because they enhance workflows, and lead to the significant healthcare quality benefits promised by EMR vendors,” said Jimenez. Dr. Jimenez is a former clinical director of content and online training for Allscripts. ImplementHIT is led by physicians and experts in clinical and medical informatics and with Ph.D.-level proficiency in online learning.

A leading-edge solution designed to fit with practices’ workflows, OptimizeHIT is fully compatible with iPads®.

Also at HIMSS, ImplementHIT will showcase their Advanced Training Portal for hospitals and large physician practices. This Portal allows these organizations’ in-house experts to customize training to their EHRs, but on a different scale than OptimizeHIT. Both solutions are compatible with all EHRs, including Epic, Allscripts, eClinicalWorks® and others. Licensing is based on practice size.

In a featured eSession at HIMSS, Dr. Jimenez will present with Margaret Cornwell, Allscripts Implementation Manager at St.Vincent Health on “Hybrid EHR Training: Maximize Adoption & Physician Productivity.” [link to].
