GE Healthcare to Bring Paris Hospitals into Digital Age

The “Région sans Film”— filmless regionproject makes use of a uniquely flexible software solution, combining multiple GE Healthcare products and a highly resilient cloud infrastructure provided by Orange. The resulting platform offers efficient SaaS (Software as a Service) PACS, RIS and Archiving services to hospitals as well as image distribution to the local general practitioners via the internet.

The connected hospitals benefit from the advanced GE Healthcare Centricity PACS, with a quick deployment and a simple implementation. All the technical support and management is included; performance and availability are guaranteed. Thus, the hospitals can dedicate their IT staff to focus on users and other applications, and do not have to hire highly skilled specialists for PACS systems.  The system uses a “pay as you go” billing model priced by exam and is subject to the platform fulfilling stringent service level agreements.  In total, 30 hospitals are within the scope of this first project phase, beginning with pilot provider Hôspital Simone Veil.

“Région sans Film” Project Underway in Country’s Largest Province

In France today, approximately half of small- and medium-sized hospitals are still using film for their imaging exams. In an effort to save costs by quickly increasing usage of digital technology, the Ministry of Health, through its state agency, has contracted with the Orange-GE Healthcare consortium to deliver digital, cloud-based PACS and archive services to the “Île de France”, the country’s most populous region.

“We have been able to benefit from the service very quickly,” said Dr. Sylvie Blangy, Chief Radiologist, Hôspital Simone Veil. “We saw immediate increase in our global productivity and users have easily transitioned to the system. The implementation was very professional, with very good support from the GE Healthcare and Orange teams.  We are now eager to enhance the service for collaboration with other connected hospitals.”

”We made an evaluation before subscribing to the archiving service, which demonstrated a real financial advantage compared to maintaining an archive in house. This even takes into account the migration costs of more than 800 000 studies from our legacy local archive,” explained Naima Mezaour, CIO of Institut Gustave Roussy Oncology Hospital, now benefiting from a service including management of the infrastructure, monitoring, upgrades and migration with guaranteed availability. “This relieves our team from tedious tasks, and gives us total visibility on our archiving costs.”

“This is an enormous breakthrough for the region,” said Bernard Algayres, General Manager of GE Healthcare IT eHealth, EMEA. “Faster diagnostic turnaround times and access to patient images by GPs are only the beginning. In future phases of this project, we’re going to build digital bridges across areas that now present great divides. It’s a very exciting initiative.”
