Nokia and Withings: Connecting People to Better Health

By Ramzi Haidamus, President Nokia Technologies

Today is a day to celebrate! Over the years, many of you have shared with us your love for Nokia. We’ve heard so many great stories about the coolest Nokia device you ever owned — something that helped define your life, make it better, more fun, and more connected to the people and things that matter to you most. Your continued enthusiasm is just one of the reasons we’re thrilled to announce some very big news today.

We’re now starting a new chapter as a company, this one focused on connecting you to better health through technology. We aim to help you lead a happier, healthier life through the kind of beautifully designed products that you expect from Nokia.

To help us do this as fast as possible, we will be welcoming Withings into the Nokia family. A leader in digital health products and apps designed to improve everyday well-being and long term health, Withings will combine perfectly with Nokia’s heritage of mobility and connectivity.

Withings products already help people manage every aspect of their health and lead a more balanced life. Their products allow you to measure how your lifestyle is affecting your wellness — how well you’re sleeping, how many calories you’re burning, how many steps you’re taking — and go beyond the numbers to give you information that matters. They help you understand how your body responds to activity and changes — the impact your activity is having on your body temperature, your weight, your blood pressure and your heart. And they do it with such a beautiful design that you love to wear them anywhere — at work, at home, or even at the opera.

Please stay tuned for more news about this new chapter for Nokia. We’re thrilled to be welcoming the Withings team to Nokia Technologies and help spread the word about all the awesome products they’re building. Together, we’ll take digital health products beyond counting and tracking to help people everywhere connect to healthier and happier lives.

Nokia plans to acquire Withings to accelerate entry into Digital Health

Espoo, Finland – Nokia has announced plans to acquire Withings, a pioneer and leader in the connected health revolution with a family of award-winning digital health products and services to help people all over the world lead healthier, happier and more productive lives. Withings would be part of our Nokia Technologies business.

“We have said consistently that digital health was an area of strategic interest to Nokia, and we are now taking concrete action to tap the opportunity in this large and important market,” said Rajeev Suri, president & CEO of Nokia. “With this acquisition, Nokia is strengthening its position in the Internet of Things in a way that leverages the power of our trusted brand, fits with our company purpose of expanding the human possibilities of the connected world, and puts us at the heart of a very large addressable market where we can make a meaningful difference in peoples’ lives.”

World Health Organization figures show cardiovascular disease as today’s number one cause of death, with more than a billion adults around the world living with uncontrolled hypertension. Diabetes now affects more than one in twelve adults worldwide, a four-fold increase since 1980. Healthcare is expected to be one of the largest vertical markets in the Internet of Things, with analysts forecasting that mobile health, with a CAGR of 37%, will be the fastest growing health care segment from 2015-2020.

“Withings shares our vision for the future of digital health and their products are smart, well designed and already helping people live healthier lives,” said Ramzi Haidamus, president of Nokia Technologies. “Combining their award-winning products and talented people with the world-class expertise and innovation of Nokia Technologies uniquely positions us to lead the next wave of innovation in digital health.”

The combination of innovative products from Withings and the Digital Health business will also ensure the ongoing renewal of Nokia Technologies’ world class IPR portfolio.

Withings was founded by Chairman Eric Carreel and CEO Cedric Hutchings in 2009 and is headquartered in France, with approximately 200 employees across its locations in Paris, Cambridge, US and Hong Kong. Withings’ portfolio of regulated and unregulated products includes activity trackers, weighing scales, thermometers, blood pressure monitors, home and baby monitors and more, and is built on a sophisticated digital health platform, providing insights to empower people to make smarter decisions about the health and wellbeing of themselves and their families. Withings’ own products are complemented by an ecosystem of more than a hundred compatible apps.

“Since we started Withings, our passion has been in empowering people to track their lifestyle and improve their health and wellbeing,” said Cédric Hutchings, CEO of Withings. “We’re excited to join Nokia to help bring our vision of connected health to more people around the world.”

The Nokia brand continues to be recognized, valued and trusted by consumers, built on a heritage of beautifully designed, innovative and reliable technology in the service of people around the world to help real human needs.

WHAT’S YOUR HEALTHY?”: AETNA STARTS THE CONVERSATION WITH NEW AD CAMPAIGN; HELPS PEOPLE ACHIEVE THEIR HEALTH GOALS WITH NEW CarePass® PLATFORM

HARTFORD, Conn., June 18, 2013 — Every person has their own unique definition of being healthy – from joining the kids on a bike ride to training for a 5k. Aetna (NYSE: AET) is trying to find out the different answers to the question “What’s Your Healthy?” through a national, integrated marketing and advertising campaign and interactive website, www.WhatsYourHealthy.com, where consumers can share their personal “healthy.”

Because everybody takes their own personal journey to becoming healthy, Aetna is also launching the new CarePass® consumer website and mobile solution, www.carepass.com. The CarePass platform offers simple and convenient access to some of the best health and wellness mobile apps in the marketplace. CarePass:

  • Helps people set personalized health and wellness goals
  • Guides them to apps to help reach those goals
  • Lets consumers sync apps to easily and securely share information
  • Inspires them to stay on track by showing progress toward their goals and connecting them to others on similar health journeys

“Asking ‘What’s Your Healthy?’ is an opportunity to engage all consumers in a conversation around achieving their best health. Beyond simply creating a dialogue, we’re helping people take action through CarePass, which empowers users to create, track and achieve their health and wellness goals,” said Mark T. Bertolini, Aetna chairman, CEO and president. “Wellness is different for different people. I practice yoga and meditation every morning because it helps me be present during the rest of the day. I’m a passionate advocate for wellness programs in the workplace, and Aetna wants to learn more about what helps others achieve their personal definition of healthy.”

“What’s Your Healthy?”

Visitors to the “What’s Your Healthy?” website can create a digital “healthy tile” by answering a few brief questions about how and why they stay healthy. These healthy tiles will be displayed on the website and can also be shared easily through social media sites. People can also engage in the conversation via Twitter by following @Aetna and using the hashtag #AetnaMyHealthy. Aetna employees were given a sneak preview of the website in early June and have already created more than 3,200 healthy tiles that are currently highlighted on the site.

The “What’s Your Healthy?” campaign will feature national print and digital ads through a wide range of health- and lifestyle-focused publications and websites. Aetna will also be running television and radio ads in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Antonio, Tampa and Washington, D.C. All of the campaign materials are available for media upon request.

Aetna is also conducting several national consumer surveys with Meredith Corporation and Harris Interactive as part of this campaign, with the results to be shared throughout the summer. The surveys will identify how consumers define being healthy, what they do to stay healthy, and how they finance their healthy habits. Results from the surveys will be featured on Meredith websites and publications such as Family Circle, Ladies’ Home Journal and Fitness.

CarePass – Helping People Set and Reach Their Health Goals

The “What’s Your Healthy?” website includes information on a number of Aetna resources that can empower people to live healthier lives, including CarePass. Anyone visiting the CarePass website – and not just Aetna members – can easily create an account and begin using all of the health and wellness apps available through the CarePass platform.

“We want to make it easier for everyone to engage in their health and hopefully shift from thinking about health care to taking care of their health,” said Martha L. Wofford, vice president and head of CarePass from Aetna. “CarePass helps consumers connect different pieces of health data to create a fuller, more personalized picture of their health.”

CarePass enables consumers to securely pull data from apps in order to track and display progress toward their goals. As a consumer connects apps and provides more information, CarePass provide a more complete profile of their overall health.

“It can be really hard to get started on a path to a healthier life. CarePass makes it easier, helping you set health and wellness goals that are meaningful to you, and then guiding you to the apps that will help you achieve those goals,” Wofford said. “We’re excited to introduce consumers and Aetna members to the great ecosystem of apps that we have spent the last year connecting to our platform, and that in aggregate have been downloaded by over 100 million users.”

CarePass features a growing catalog of more than 20 market-leading consumer apps, including iTriage. The newest apps partners are BodyMedia®, Fitbug, UP by JawboneTM, LoseIt!, and Withings.

Withings Makes the World’s First Internet Connected Baby and Toddler Scale with App Available in the US

The Withings Smart Kid Scale brings new advancements to parents who want a way to track the weight and growth of their new-borns and toddlers
Paris, France – January 16, 2013 – Withings, pioneers of Internet connected devices, announces the US availability of its Internet connected baby and toddler scale, the Withings Smart Kid Scale. Withings has combined cutting edge technology and exquisite design to create a scale that will give parents a simple to use and extremely accurate way to monitor, understand and share their child’s growth using the power of the internet.
The Smart Kid Scale is the ideal device to help parents start their kids off on the right track to a future long-term healthy lifestyle. Obesity affects 17% (approximately 12.5 million) of all children between the ages of 2 and 19 in the United States, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.  Also according to the CDC, this number has tripled since 1980.  These numbers are a true indication of the importance of parents monitoring and tracking the weight of their children at an early age- even from infancy.
Cédric Hutchings, Co-Founder of Withings says: “With the Smart Kid Scale, we’re hoping to bring the same positive outcomes we’ve seen in adults with weigh tracking to the adults of the future.  We’ve made it very simple for parents to track the weight progress of their children and therefore giving them a tool that will assist in turning their children into healthy adults.”
The Smart Kid Scale has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, which allows for the instant transfer of data measured by the scale to be sent directly to the Withings Baby Companion application.  By using the Withings Smart Kid Scale and accompanying application, parents can access the history of their child’s weight readings.  Also, parents can easily communicate the progress of their child’s weight with their doctor, pediatrician, family and friends.
In addition to storing weight data, the Withings Baby Companion app has been designed to allow parents to capture other important data and keep track of milestones.  Users can log the child’s height and see how he/she compares with other children of the same gender and age.  The app also allows parents to keep track of feedings.  Breastfeeding parents can log when the last feeding was, which side the baby fed from and how long the feeding was.  Parents using bottles can keep track of bottles and ounces.
The Smart Kid Scale can be used from infancy to eight years old.  The scale features a large graphical screen for animations and instructions, a button that allows parents to easily record their baby’s height, and a compact design.  The scale comes with a two-piece interlocking baby basket that is inserted into the scale’s base and is used to weigh infants.  The bi-fold design is perfect for storage and travel.  Once the child grows out of the baby basket and can stand up on his/her own, the basket can be removed to reveal a toddler scale.
Withings Smart Kid Scale Technical Specifications:
  • Weighing Range: 0-55 lbs
  • Accuracy: 10g (0.02lb)
  • Connectivity: WiFi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth Smart
  • Display: Large graphical screen (120×58 pixels)
  • Power Supply: 4 x AAA Batteries
  • Dimensions: 11” x 9.1” x 1” (without baby basket) / 22” x 10” x 3.7” (with baby basket)
  • Weight: 3.3 lbs
The Smart Kid Scale joins the wide range of Withings devices and applications that are aimed to both adults and children, such as the Smart Baby Monitor.
Withings provides an open API to allow third party service providers to retrieve readings recorded by the Smart Kid Scale, and thus offers parents additional services and guidance to monitor their child’s growth.
The Withings Smart Kid Scale is available from Withings.com and other retailers for $179.95.  The Withings Baby Companion app is available for free from the App Store at itunes.apple.com.
