VitalHealth Software to Participate in Health Story Demonstration at HIMSS 2013 Interoperability Showcase

VitalHealth Software to Showcase Cloud-based EHR Designed with Mayo Clinic in Collaborative Demo

Minneapolis, MN — February 19, 2013 —VitalHealth Software, a leading global provider of web-based solutions for health management founded by the Mayo Clinic and Noaber Foundation, today announced that the company will participate in a Health Story demonstration at the 2013 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Annual Conference and Exhibition from March 3 -7, in New Orleans. VitalHealth will demo the latest version of its cloud-based electronic health record (EHR) solution as a participant in The HIMSS Interoperability Showcase™ (La Nouvelle Ballroom, Level 2). The VitalHealth EHR will serve as the interoperability and data sharing demonstration’s primary care EHR system. Designed in collaboration with Mayo Clinic’s Center for Innovation (CFI), the VitalHealth EHR is purpose-built to be easy to use, compatible with handheld devices such as tablets, and adaptable to the varied work styles of small practices. Delivered on a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model, VitalHealth EHR supports the latest interoperability standards. The EHR is certified for Meaningful Use and meets or exceeds HIPAA privacy and security requirements.

Approximately 1.2 billion clinical documents are produced in the United States each year, however this tremendous source of information is underutilized in current computer-based record systems. The Health Story Project will bring together several health IT vendors at HIMSS 2013 to demonstrate HL7 Consolidated CDA (Clinical Document Architecture) based interoperability, allowing attendees to follow the path of a patient across several points of care.

“Interoperability is crucial for achieving better outcomes and more affordable care, because it helps remove hazardous ambiguity, incompleteness and waste from the medical record. We have long been supporters of IHE and the Health Story Project, so we’re pleased to have been selected to participate this year,” said Blair Butterfield, President, North America, VitalHealth Software. “Our recent success at the North American Connectathon, where we passed all planned tests for exchanging C-CDA documents, was a key milestone to ensuring the demonstration at HIMSS will show the power of interoperability to enhance quality healthcare delivery.”

VitalHealth Software was founded to develop a game changing, cloud-based eHealth application platform, with an emphasis on solutions for managing chronic diseases such as diabetes, COPD, CHF, depression, cancer and Alzheimer’s. The company also has market-leading solutions for ACO, managing online interventions and outcome monitoring for behavioral health. VitalHealth’s primary goal is having a positive impact on the health of 10 million people in five years while at the same time becoming a market leader.

In the Health Story demonstration, which features six leading vendors, the VitalHealth EHR will first receive an unstructured CDA document containing scanned imaging data. After review and diagnosis, the primary care physician will then refer the patient to an oncologist, by generating a referral note and electronically transmitting a Continuity of Care Document (CCD) to the oncologist. The process will streamline and improve the accuracy and responsiveness of existing paper-based processes, demonstrating how interoperable health IT systems can lead to faster, cheaper, and better care delivery.

ICSA Labs Set to Begin Testing EHRs for Stage 2 Meaningful Use Requirements

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – ICSA Labs, an independent division of Verizon, is now officially authorized and accredited to begin certifying electronic health records for the next stage of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Meaningful Use requirements.

The new 2014 Edition, Stage 2 certification program of HHS’s Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology provides more transparency and elevates the overall testing and certification process by mandating additional requirements for organizations providing EHR services. These requirements include a strengthening of security, enhanced interoperability for facilitating health information exchange, better protection of private patient information and new ways for providers to become “meaningful users.”

Last September, ICSA Labs received authorization from the Office of the National Coordinator for the preliminary Stage 2 of the certification program.

To test and validate the ONC 2014 Edition methods and test tools, ICSA Labs successfully conducted a week-long pilot program in December with four vendors that offer EHR-related solutions supporting the more rigorous Stage 2 Meaningful Use Requirements. These included Dynamic Health IT and Glenwood Systems.

“The latest round of federal requirements will enable us to help companies strengthen the security and privacy of their EHR offerings, ultimately benefiting both patient and health care provider,” said Amit Trivedi, health care program manager for ICSA Labs. “Now that we are fully authorized and accredited to certify and test technology meeting the permanent Meaningful Use requirements, we are officially open for business.”

EHR vendors also must have their products tested by laboratories accredited by the National Voluntary Lab Accreditation Program and certified by bodies authorized by the ONC and accredited by the American National Standards Institute. ICSA Labs is accredited by both NVLAP and ANSI.

The ONC’s Health Information Technology Certification program, which provides authorization for the certification of electronic health care records, was established in January 2011.  The recently published Stage 2 Standards, Implementation Specifications and Certification Criteria Final Rule is administered nationally by the ONC.

ICSA Labs is NVLAP- accredited as a Health IT Test Lab and is also an ONC-Authorized Certification Body (ONC-ACB) accredited by ANSI to ISO/IEC Guide 65.

ICSA Labs and IHE USA Team Up to Deliver New Certification That Assures Security, Interoperability of Health Information Technology

Today ICSA Labs announced it has teamed up with IHE USA, a nonprofit that drives adoption of standards-based interoperability to improve patient care, to offer a new certification program. The program, which aims to assure the security and interoperability of health IT, will help ensure that different software and systems can securely connect.

Currently, many products cannot “talk” to each other, making it challenging for health care providers to move to a paperless environment. By implementing products certified to IHE profiles, health care providers and hospitals can take advantage of more complex workflows.

New Service and Testing Will Begin at the 2013 North American Connectathon on Jan. 28 in Chicago

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – IHE USA, a nonprofit organization that drives adoption of standards-based interoperability to improve patient care, and ICSA Labs, an independent division of Verizon, today unveiled a new certification program aimed at assuring the security and interoperability of health information technology.

The program will provide industry-accepted certification to complement existing conformance testing to IHE integration profiles to ensure that different software and systems can securely connect.

Certification to these profiles, which also provide significant underpinnings to Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) specifications, will give purchasers of health IT products independent third-party assurance that there is a standardized, repeatable process that ensures products are suitable for secure health data exchange, and that the products function as intended.

“Implementing products certified to the IHE profiles will allow health care providers and hospitals to take advantage of more complex workflows that can make a huge difference in applying information technology to health care,” said Joyce Sensmeier, president of IHE USA and vice president of Informatics at HIMSS. “Right now, a lot of products cannot ‘talk’ to each other, which makes it very challenging for health care providers to move to a paperless environment.”

Participants who are registered for the 2013 NA Connectathon, sponsored by IHE USA, will be able to register for certification testing at the event. For more information, click here.  Results will be evaluated by ICSA Labs, which will grant certification based on requirements set forth by IHE USA, and the general principles covered by ISO/IEC Guide 65 for organizations providing product certification. Certification also will include ongoing testing to ensure that certified products continue to perform as tested.

“Given our decades of experience as an independent testing and certification entity and as an ONC Authorized Certification Body, ICSA Labs is fully committed to accelerating the adoption of secure, and interoperable health information technology furthering the goal of improving patient safety and care,” said ICSA Labs Managing Director George Japak. “Our new joint certification will have a significant impact on ensuring that the vision of health IT becomes a reality.”

Certified products will be published by IHE USA, as well as in the official ICSA Labs product directory. Three tiers of certification will be awarded:

  • Tier 1: Conformance to IHE profiles
  • Tier 2: Demonstrated interoperability among disparate systems
  • Tier 3: Validated implementations of deployed certified technology

Vendors interested in learning more about having their products certified to IHE integration profiles should contact IHECertification@icsalabs.com.

Verizon Makes Its Health Care Fraud-Detection Platform Available to Government and Private Health Insurers Throughout the U.S.

NEW YORK – Building technology to help transform the health care industry, Verizon is making available to government and private health insurers throughout the U.S. an automated fraud-detection platform that will enable these organizations to better detect and prevent fraud, a growing abuse that results in more than $250 billion a year in losses.

The offering, Verizon Fraud Management for Healthcare, is an advanced-software platform tailored to the health care industry that uses predictive modeling technology to examine health care payment requests and route potentially fraudulent claims to case managers for investigation.  The highly scalable platform is designed to help identify fraud before payments are made, reducing improper payments, and the administrative and legal costs associated with traditional “pay-and-chase” recovery operations.

(Note: Listen to an audio podcast on Verizon Fraud Management for Healthcare to learn more on how it can improve health care fraud detection and prevention programs.)

“Health care fraud impacts all Americans by siphoning scarce dollars away from improving patient outcomes and access to care,” said Dr. Peter Tippett, vice president and chief medical information officer, Verizon Connected Healthcare Solutions.  “By using the advanced technologies and analytical capabilities built into Verizon Fraud Management for Healthcare, health insurers will be better equipped to identify fraud and abuse, begin to turn the health care cost curve, and achieve one of the key objectives of U.S. health care transformation efforts.”

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in 2009, the most recent year for which statistics are available, national health expenditures totaled $2.5 trillion, representing 17.6 percent of U.S. gross domestic product.  It is estimated that fraud accounts for as much as $260 billion, or at least 10 percent of the annual U.S. health care expense.

Predictive modeling is commonly used in the financial services and telecommunications industries to combat fraud.  It employs advanced algorithms and analytics, including link, behavioral and statistical analysis, to monitor huge volumes of information in near real time to help identify cases of potential fraud prior to processing and payment.

The Verizon fraud-detection solution employs a customized version of the software platform the company uses for its own fraud prevention programs.  The internal platform processes more than 20 billion records on a day, including more than 700 million call records.

“The current post-paid model used for health care fraud programs is highly inefficient and unsustainable,” said Nancy Fabozzi, senior industry analyst – health care and life sciences IT, Frost & Sullivan.  “Verizon’s use of advanced software technology to evaluate and process medical claims prior to payment is indicative of the future direction of health care fraud prevention.”

Verizon is creating health care IT ecosystems that empower medical professionals and transform patient care.  Through its Verizon Connected Healthcare Solutions practice group, Verizon offers a comprehensive portfolio of managed, IT and consulting services aimed at enhancing health care access and delivery, and better managing costs.
