Qualcomm Life and WebMD Collaborate to Bring Integrated Digital Health Resources and Tools to Consumers

Qualcomm Life’s 2net Ecosystem attracts new technology partners with release of 2net Hub API and SDK and launch of 2net Ecosystem Technology Certification Program at the 2013 HIMSS Conference in New Orleans, LA

NEW ORLEANS and SAN DIEGO – March 4, 2013 – Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Life, Inc., is joining forces with WebMD, the leading source of health information, to bring in a new era of next generation health care and enable millions of health-conscious consumers to access and manage wireless health data from a wide array of fitness, wellness and medical devices. The announcement was made at the HIMSS 2013 conference being held at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.
“We are delighted to be working with WebMD, the leading multi-screen source of health information for consumers and physicians,” said Rick Valencia, vice president and general manager, Qualcomm Life. “Our industry leading 2netTM Platform will be integrated with various WebMD offerings to provide consumers and physicians with an industry-defining connected health experience.”
Qualcomm Life and WebMD are making biometric data available, actionable and relevant to consumers so they can more proactively manage their health and fitness. This technology collaboration will establish an open ecosystem of digital health apps and third-party devices across various disease categories and lifestyle interests where consumers and physicians can select solutions that suit their preferences and healthcare needs.
Qualcomm Life Launches 2net Ecosystem Initiatives
In addition to the WebMD collaboration, Qualcomm Life is further enabling innovation and customization of mobile health applications and services by announcing limited availability of the Beta version of the 2net Hub Application Programming Interface (API) and Software Development Kit (SDK), as well as ensuring a robust connectivity experience across the 2net Ecosystem with the launch of its Technology Certification Program.
The 2net Hub API and SDK Beta, available by the end of March, will enable existing and new 2net Ecosystem partners to develop custom health care device connectivity for inclusion in the 2net Hub device library.
A key value of this offering is to enable integrated device functionality that takes advantage of wireless features of the health care device’s sensors, and provides the output in an accessible form on one of the most comprehensive and open wireless eco-systems in the world, the 2net Platform.
With over 220 technology collaborators making up the growing 2net Ecosystem, Qualcomm Life today also launched the Technology Certification Program which will challenge and empower participants of the 2net Ecosystem by offering criteria that categorizes products and solutions as 2net Basic, 2net Gold or 2net Platinum.

Independa, GreatCall Team to Integrate Emergency Response into Remote Monitoring of Elderly Living Independently

In the latest addition to its integrated telecare suite for the independent elderly, Independa will incorporate GreatCall’s 5Star Urgent Response™ system into its Artemis™ wireless monitoring ecosystem.

Independa plans to announce tomorrow that GreatCall’s mobile personal emergency response system (mPERS) will join health and activity monitors as the first safety sensor for Artemis, scheduled for general availability this fall.  GreatCall’s system uses mobile and GPS technologies to exceed traditional emergency response systems that depend only on wireline phones.  The enhancement will further help professional caregivers to enable the elderly to live independently longer, with greater safely and comfort.

The agreement between the two San Diego-based innovators follows Independa announcements of plans to collaborate with Qualcomm Life and Telcare to enrich its Artemis solution.

5 Star Urgent Response to Become First Safety Feature in Independa Artemis Offering

SAN DIEGO – July 18, 2012 – Telehealth innovator Independa™ announced today that it will integrate GreatCall’s 5Star Urgent Response™ system into its Artemis™ wireless monitoring platform, enhancing ability to remotely track the well-being of elderly people who live independently.

5Star, GreatCall’s mobile personal emergency response system (mPERS), is the first safety monitoring feature planned for Artemis, set to become generally available this fall. Independa previously announced health and activity-related sensors.

GreatCall’s emergency response system will join the ecosystem that Independa is building to help caregivers envelope elderly people living alone in a comprehensive network of care linked to wireless monitoring devices and Internet technology.

Using mobile and GPS technology for immediate, accurate location of the care recipient, GreatCall’s system is the forward-looking update to emergency response systems of old that relied on wireline telephone technology.

“GreatCall is well-known for its innovations in elder care technology, product reliability and quality, and outstanding customer support, so we’re very pleased to be adding its 5Star Urgent Response system to Artemis,” said Independa CEO Kian Saneii. “The 5Star Device is attractive, small and convenient, and the peace of mind it can deliver is huge.”

In addition to the 5Star Device, GreatCall’s Urgent Response service is available on the iPhone and Android mobile devices, as well as the Jitterbug mobile phone from GreatCall. A care recipient needs only to press a button on the 5Star Device to be connected to a trained customer service agent. GreatCall, of San Diego, supports 5Star Urgent Response users around the clock with full national coverage by certified care agents based in the United States.

Under the agreement with Independa, GreatCall will inform professional caregivers of emergency calls from Independa users. Reports on these calls will be incorporated into Independa’s cloud-based Caregiver Web App, the central dashboard and control panel that provides a full picture of an older adult’s health and well-being.

“We’re very pleased that Independa selected our 5Star Urgent Response as the mPERS component of its Artemis monitoring suite,” said GreatCall CEO David Inns. “Joining the Independa ecosystem will enable us to broaden our reach in the home care, home health and senior living markets, becoming part of a larger caring system.”

Laurie Orlov, founder of the market research firm Aging in Place Technology Watch, said: “Wireless and mobile technology represent the next significant direction in enabling older adults to feel safe when they are out and about. The addition of GreatCall’s easy-to-use and highly accessible 5Star Urgent Response system to Independa’s comprehensive suite of Integrated CloudCare solutions represents best-of-breed innovation to further that important trend.”

U.S. Preventive Medicine, Inc. launches a first-of-its-kind health and fitness app in collaboration with Qualcomm Life today at the 3rd annual mHealth Summit. The app is called “Macaw(TM)” from The Prevention Plan(TM), and is designed for people who exercise regularly as well as physical fitness novices.

  • It helps assess an individual’s personal health risks.
  • And unlike other available health and fitness apps, Macaw will be able to transform a smartphone into the ultimate personal health hub by connecting an individual’s health apps and wireless devices for tracking weight, fitness and overall activity: including pedometers, glucose meters, activity armbands, scales, labs, sleep managers, mobile weight loss apps and blood pressure cuffs — into a single app for complete tracking.

Macaw is free for the iPhone and Android and was designed by Fjord, the designer behind popular social media sites foursquare and flickr.

For members of U.S. Preventive Medicine’s The Prevention Plan, Macaw has additional features including showing the individual’s personal Prevention Score(SM) and integrating data between the mobile app and the Plan’s online health management platform. Macaw can be downloaded for free on the iPhone and Android devices. It is enabled by Qualcomm Life Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, and was designed by Fjord, a leading design consultancy.

With the initial launch, Macaw will allow integration with the Fitlinxx Actiped+ all-day activity monitor, and WorkSmart Labs’ weight loss and fitness app Noom Weight Loss. Macaw users will be able to track the progress of their activity, nutrition and health knowledge while engaging in games that unlock prizes.
