80 Percent of US Physicians Believe Virtual Assistants Will Drastically Change Healthcare by 2018, Nuance Survey Finds

BURLINGTON, Mass., – February 27, 2013Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN), the first to bring the power of the virtual assistant directly to consumers through mobile phones and customer service attendants, recently surveyed US doctors about the effect virtual assistants will have on healthcare. Overwhelmingly, 80 percent believe that within five years, virtual assistants will drastically change how they interact and use electronic health records (EHRs) and other healthcare apps, making them more efficient and freeing up time to spend on patients.
 
Doctors stated that mobile virtual assistants could impact healthcare most by helping them access information in EHRs, and navigate through the process using conversational commands. One out of three doctors spends 30 percent or more of their day on administrative duties — activities that could be redirected or removed using voice-enabled virtual assistants.
 
How will virtual assistants put the care back in healthcare?
  • 65 percent say the top role for a virtual assistant: more accurate, timely information to support care or alert them to missing information in records.
  • 73 percent expect virtual assistants could improve healthcare and patient engagement by helping to coordinate care between multiple caregivers.
  • 80 percent believe virtual assistants will benefit patients most by engaging them in the process, prompting them to adhere to health advice and modifying behaviors.
“Mobile virtual assistants have the potential to reinvent the way we deliver patient care,” says Dr. Alireza Shafaie, Palo Alto Medical Foundation. “As a consumer, I already experience the value of mobile assistants, and would love to bring that natural, intelligence-based dialogue to my work as a primary care physician. For every one patient I see I have to communicate my recommendations in three different places. A mobile advisor that could do that on my behalf in one shot would give me back more time in what truly matters – time with my patients.”
 
One area of interest with physicians is intelligent, voice-driven, computerized physician order entry (CPOE) that uses more sophisticated reasoning for ordering medications, labs and radiology exams beyond mere speech. Healthcare developers can embed virtual assistants — ones that conduct meaningful conversations, interpret physician requests, ask for clarification and seamlessly manage changes in course of action much like their human equivalents — directly into any clinical app to enhance a variety of new and existing workflows, including CPOE.

Approximately 1.2 billion clinical documents are produced in the United States each year, however this tremendous source of information is underutilized in current computer-based record systems. The Health Story Project will bring together several health IT vendors at HIMSS 2013 to demonstrate HL7 Consolidated CDA (Clinical Document Architecture) based interoperability, allowing attendees to follow the path of a patient across several points of care.

Speech Recognition Tools Look to Play a Crucial Role within EMR

KLAS’ 2013 look at speech recognition vendors provides key insights for providers

OREM, Utah – Thursday, February 14, 2013 - Speech recognition vendors hope that just as front-end and back-end speech technology proved to cut costs and improve efficiency for transcription and image documentation, similar efficiencies can be found for EMR. Through various discussions with providers, KLAS provides key insights into the current state of speech recognition vendors and future considerations. As ICD-10 Takes Main Stage, Consulting Strategies Play Leading Role

Questions about technology readiness abound while preparation for ICD-10 complexity continues to grow

Orem, Utah – February 12, 2013 – While preparation for ICD-10 intensifies, questions surrounding EMR vendor readiness and ICD-10-related technologies are surfacing. In the KLAS report, ICD-10 Perception 2012: Can Technology Relieve Readiness Issues?, the second report of a two-part series, KLAS discusses how leading providers around the country are utilizing third-party consulting firms to help them overcome these and other key ICD-10 challenges, including staff readiness, training, and technology.

The report reveals that providers rated EMR vendors Cerner, Epic, and Siemens highest in their ICD-10 preparedness, whereas Allscripts and MEDITECH rate lowest. Among the technologies providers are utilizing for the ICD-10 transition is computer-assisted coding, which the majority of the market is looking to 3M for. This report, which will be further discussed in an upcoming live webinar hosted by KLAS, explores 3M, The Advisory Board, Allscripts, Cerner, CPSI, Deloitte, Epic, HMS, McKesson, MEDITECH, Nuance, OptumInsight, Precyse, PwC, QuadraMed, and Siemens.

Part one of this series, the KLAS report entitled ICD-10 Consulting: Roadmap to a Successful Transition, was released December 3, 2012.This report discusses how providers expect to use consulting firms in their future preparation and ICD-10 transition plans. KLAS found that the vast majority (84 percent) of providers had engaged a consulting firm for ICD-10 roadmap/gap analysis. The Advisory Board tops the ranking in this category with high praise for quality roadmaps and best-practice sharing, though findings are showing that Deloitte has the largest and most complex engagements of any firm. Training was the second most frequent type of engagement, with the Precyse University offering standing out. The report also included 3M, The Advisory Board, Aspen Advisor, Cerner, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, maxIT, Precyse, PwC, and Siemens.

Providers Rethink Health Information Management Strategy in Face of Brewing ICD-10 Storm

Regulatory requirements and ICD-10 changes challenge current go-forward strategies     

Orem, Utah – January 8, 2013 - Providers tell KLAS they are reassessing their go-forward health information management (HIM) strategies accompanying ICD-10 to address new challenges around organizational consolidation or expansion, EMRs, and other HIM technology implementations. This and other insights can be found in a new KLAS report entitled HIM Services 2012: Helping to Weather the Storm.

“The monumental shift to ICD-10 has providers worried about keeping up with regulatory requirements, obtaining and retaining the right staff, and handling the fluctuation in volumes and productivity that they predict will occur,” said Graham Triggs, research director. “As volumes increase with 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day for the next 18 years, the need for adequate, qualified, and trained staff becomes clear.”

Biggest HIM Department Challenge

To address these staffing and other HIM challenges, some providers are looking to third-party assistance to outsource transcription (MTSO), coding, scanning, or release of information. Providers looking to alleviate ICD-10 coding concerns are also considering computer-assisted coding (CAC) and clinical documentation improvement technology, which are also discussed in depth in this report.

A major focus of this report is a detailed discussion of the turnaround times, report quality, account management, and administrative tools of MTSO firms. Providers have also identified clear distinctions as they examine what firms offer in expertise and tools and their track records of client satisfaction.

Precyse and TransTech top the satisfaction rankings, but more comprehensive offerings by larger firms Nuance and M*Modal continue to dominate market share. Among reasons discussed in the report for Precyse’s and TransTech’s scores are their unique HIM offerings. Precyse offers clients transcription and coding services, a CAC product, and the ability to fully outsource the HIM department. TransTech is onshore only but still delivers consistent report quality and fast turnaround times as well as offering a unique service for radiologists. The key reasons behind Nuance’s and M*Modal’s offerings and market share dominance are discussed at length as well.

Other fully rated MTSO firms include Accentus, Acusis, Nuance (Transcend), and Superior Global. Early data and component firms include Amphion, FutureNet, Keystrokes, MedScribe, M*Modal, NEMT, PJ&A, StenTel, and Transdyne. Findings about Alpha Systems for scanning services and about Healthport and MRO Corp for release of information are also discussed.
