Arthritis Associates of South Florida Acquires Access to Patient Health History Faster with Digital Pen Technology from Anoto and NextGen Healthcare

A lot of healthcare practices continue to struggle with capturing patient information particularly when importing medical family and social history into their EHR solution. Survey results from Anoto confirm that despite the growing numbers of organizations implementing electronic health records (EHR) systems, many are not decreasing their reliance on paper-based processes.

A good example of this would be Arthritis Associates of South Florida, a practice that specializes in adult and pediatric rheumatology. Previously, notes from patient visits would be either dictated or written down and then transcribed which would take about three days to process. Now, by just having the patient fill out a form with a digital pen, the practice can immediately bring relevant data directly into their EHR system. This has resulted in improved efficiency – especially for new patients.

Joint Solution, NextPen™, Imports Patient Information Immediately Into EHR Solution Resulting in Faster Diagnosis and Care for Patients

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — July 10, 2012 — Anoto Group, the worldwide leader in Digital Pen and Paper technology, and NextGen Healthcare Information Systems, LLC announced that Arthritis Associates of South Florida has experienced significant benefits since implementing digital pen and paper technology – particularly when importing medical family and social history into their EHR solution.

Arthritis Associates of South Florida specializes in adult and pediatric rheumatology. They treat all types of arthritis and autoimmune disorders through nonsurgical means. Previously, notes from patient visits would be dictated and transcribed and would take about three days to process. Now, by just having the patient fill out a form with a digital pen, the practice can immediately bring relevant data directly into their EHR system. This has resulted in improved efficiency – especially for new patients.

“The information and health history we capture is invaluable in our being able to determine a diagnosis,” said Steven I. Goodman, M.D. “Now patients can just fill out forms with the digital pen and we can quickly capture details, such as where they are having pain, how severe it is, what makes it better and what makes it worse. Now, when I walk into the room, I have access to everything I need – it’s all right there.”

The system works exactly like traditional pen and paper. Each medical assistant is assigned two pens. They provide the patient with the form and the digital pen and then later check to make sure that the data is downloaded correctly. The handwritten information is recorded onto a chip in the digital pen. When the form is completed, the data in the pen is transferred via a computer docking station. The handwritten information is then converted into electronic data for immediate use.  The solution also helps to achieve meaningful use standards since the forms contain details such as smoking history, race and demographic information.

“Digital pen and paper technology is enabling healthcare organizations like Arthritis Associates of South Florida to increase efficiencies while also helping them to move toward achieving Meaningful Use,” said Pietro Parravicini, senior vice president area manager Americas for Anoto. “Digital pens can quickly capture important information and are very easy to use for staff and patients alike, resulting in immediate benefits.”

In addition to their current use of the technology, Arthritis Associates of South Florida is looking to expand the combined solution from Anoto and NextGen Healthcare within its practice to collect data for disease activity levels for rheumatoid arthritis. They are currently in the process of developing a template that patients can use to fill out with questions reflecting the active level of their condition. The practice believes this will help doctors more quickly and easily prescribe what is needed to improve patient comfort and outcomes.

NextGen Healthcare Selected by Norton Sound Health Corporation to Enhance Rural Patient Care

Horsham, Pa. – May 15, 2012 – NextGen Healthcare Information Systems, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Quality Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: QSII) and a leading provider of healthcare information systems and connectivity solutions, today announced a new agreement with Norton Sound Health Corporation (NSHC) to deploy NextGen® Ambulatory EHR, NextGen® Practice Management, NextGen® Inpatient Solutions, and other NextGen® solutions throughout the organization. This agreement further strengthens NextGen Healthcare’s position as one of the leading providers of information technology (IT) solutions for tribal health services nationwide.

Headquartered in Nome, Alaska, NSHC serves the Bering Strait region in the northwestern part of the state. The network has a health center in each of the 15 remote villages throughout the region, and implementation of NextGen Healthcare technologies will further ensure consistent care across the region.

Currently, providers at the village health centers rely on the Alaska Community Health Aid Practitioner Manual (CHAM) to aid in diagnoses, which is not integrated with any electronic health records (EHR) system. The implementation of NextGen Ambulatory EHR allows NSHC to use customized templates for the top 20 diagnoses and procedures outlined in the CHAM.

Additionally, NSHC is slated to expand its patient services by opening an 18-bed hospital in November that will provide the region with increased out-patient services in dental, audiology, behavioral health and ophthalmology care. When the facility opens, it will use NextGen Healthcare’s inpatient product line, including NextGen® Inpatient Clinicals and NextGen® Inpatient Financials, to create a seamless care continuum across the enterprise. This solution, combined with the technology NSHC is currently implementing, lays the groundwork for physicians to easily communicate and work with the new facility to improve patient care.

“Our organization sought a high level of customization and flexibility in an EHR and practice management system, and we had a short timeframe to find and implement a system – especially as we prepare to open the new hospital later this year, “said Dave Hodges, chief information officer at NSHC. “NextGen Healthcare understood and met our challenge by working closely with us to address our specific needs and deadlines. We are confident that implementing NextGen’s leading solutions will not only help us attest for Meaningful Use, but also improve the connectivity and communications between physicians, patients and our entire health system.”

NextGen Practice Management will further aid in increasing productivity by eliminating the current paper-based record keeping systems. Providers will use mobile devices to remotely access patient records, which will improve connectivity and real-time response rates, especially in emergency situations.

“Our health system covers a very large area with many remote villages that are hard to reach, so having accessible technology that makes it easier for doctors to respond quickly to patients is imperative,” said Deven Parlikar, president and CEO of NSHC. “Our patients have always been our top priority, so being able to provide the latest technology will help us to provide the highest level of care.”

“NSHC has had the distinct, ongoing challenge of serving patients throughout northern Alaska, which requires solutions that will help optimize the delivery of patient care and better communicate across the organization,” said Scott Decker, president of NextGen Healthcare. “We remain committed to serving tribal and urban groups throughout the nation, and providing tools to customize our broad technology platform to fit each organization’s specific needs so they can successfully serve their respective communities. This flexibility within our solutions portfolio is among the key advantages of the diverse NextGen platform.”

About Norton Sound Health Corporation

Norton Sound Health Corporation (NSHC) was founded in 1970 and is a Tribally owned and operated, independent, not-for-profit health care organization that represents all communities and areas of the Bering Strait region, a 44,000 square-mile section of northwestern Alaska. NSHC is quickening the pace of positive change by refocusing its system to put patients, clients, and communities first. NextGen Healthcare client, grace community health center, recEIves medicaid EHR incentives with support of kentucky rec

Grace CHC selects NextGen for its ability to meet distinctive health center needs and concurrently secures more than $150,000 in initial Meaningful Use incentives

Horsham, Pa. – March 9, 2011 – NextGen Healthcare Information Systems, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Quality Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: QSII) and a leading provider of healthcare information systems and connectivity solutions, today announced that Gray, Ky.-based Grace Community Health Center, has secured in excess of $150,000 in state Medicaid incentives by demonstrating its recent selection of the company’s certified electronic health records (EHR) solution.

With the support of the Kentucky Regional Extension Center, Grace CHC registered its physicians for the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program in February 2010 and quickly secured the maximum payment amount of $21,500 per physician from the government. Grace CHC plans to utilize NextGen® solutions to help it achieve Meaningful Use while streamlining the complex billing and quality reporting requirements that are unique to community health centers.

“Throughout this process, it was important to identify a partner that understood the long-term needs of community health centers and could aid us in achieving Meaningful Use,” said David A. Worthy, MD, CEO of Grace Community Health Center. “NextGen Healthcare’s extensive experience with CHCs, coupled with the support of our local regional extension center, will help prepare us to complete Stage 1 Meaningful Use qualifications in late 2011 and maximize use of the technology’s billing and reporting capabilities going forward.”

As a health center with several grant awards, Grace CHC required more than just a standard clinical and financial system to help it meet the reporting requirements for multiple private and federal funding sources. NextGen® Ambulatory EHR and NextGen® Practice Management offer a tightly integrated reporting solution, with ideal features including auto-completion of UDS reports and a single database from which to pull required quality metrics, as well as the flexibility to modify templates to the health center’s specific needs.

“Our clients are running full-steam ahead toward Meaningful Use, while also keeping a close watch on how health IT will contribute to their longer-term growth strategies,” said Scott Decker, president of NextGen Healthcare. “Grace CHC’s early recognition in securing the first wave of stimulus payments is evidence of the vast opportunities and benefits to be reaped from EHR adoption. Close partnerships between vendors and all the stakeholders in Meaningful Use are critical to allowing more primary care practices, health centers and critical access hospitals to achieve similar results.”
