Department of Veterans Affairs Standardizes on CenTrak’s Clinical-Grade Real-Time Location System™ (RTLS) to Improve Operational Efficiency and Quality of Veteran Care

The VA selects CenTrak’s Clinical-Grade RTLS™ infrastructure in a $543 million federal contract to drive multiple equipment and clinical applications across all of its 152 medical centers and 1,400 ancillary clinics.
(Newtown, PA – March 4, 2013) – CenTrak today announced the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has chosen its active-RTLS infrastructure to location-enable all of the VA’s hospitals, clinics and consolidated mail outpatient pharmacies as a subcontractor to HP. CenTrak’s enterprise-wide RTLS infrastructure will automate the management of hundreds of thousands of mobile medical devices, impacting availability, utilization, shrinkage and patient safety. The Clinical-Grade Locating™ technology facilitates many workflow improvements including mobile medical equipment utilization, sterile processing efficiency, and monitoring temperature-sensitive consumables. Possible future RTLS applications could address patient wander prevention, hand hygiene compliance and high acuity (OR and ED) workflow.
The VA has developed a reputation for setting important healthcare IT standards. The concept of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) was a direct result of the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA). Intelligent InSites to Provide Enterprise-Wide Software Solution for Department of Veterans Affairs’ $543 Million RTLS Contract

Fargo, ND – February 20, 2013 – Intelligent InSites, Inc., the leading provider of real-time operational intelligence for healthcare in the government and commercial sectors, has been selected to provide the enterprise-wide software solution for the Department of Veterans Affairs’  (VA) $543 million Real Time Location System (RTLS) contract, as a subcontractor to the prime contractor, HP Enterprise Services.

The five-year contract will provide 152 medical centers in the 21 Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISNs) and seven Consolidated Medical Outpatient Pharmacy facilities with a real-time, system-wide solution to help improve operational efficiency, quality, satisfaction, and compliance. The solution supports VA’s objectives to decrease operational costs, reduce delays in patient care, and increase clinical efficiencies and staff productivity.

Real-Time Operational Intelligence

By automatically collecting data from millions of RTLS and RFID tags on VA medical equipment, surgical instruments, and supplies, the Intelligent InSites solution will provide VA with unprecedented visibility, analytics, and intelligence into its operational processes.  Initial use cases include asset management, cath lab supply management, sterile processing workflow, and automated temperature monitoring.  Future use cases include patient wander management, hand hygiene monitoring, emergency department workflow, and operating room workflow.

Enterprise-Wide Architecture

The Intelligent InSites software platform is designed to span multiple hospitals across large healthcare systems, aggregating and processing data to provide real-time operational intelligence at the department level, hospital level, and healthcare system level.  At the level of a VA Medical Center, the Intelligent InSites solution will help VA employees impact operational processes and patient care in real time.  At a regional and national level, the enterprise-wide capabilities of the Intelligent InSites platform will allow VA to monitor, benchmark, and improve system-wide operational performance and process improvement initiatives, resulting in increased healthcare efficiency and improved Veteran care.
