CAREGIVER RELIEF ON THE WAY: SMARTPHONE APP IN BETA SEEKS TO DE-STRESS THE LIVES OF 65 MILLION AMERICAN CAREGIVERS

“Unfrazzle” for iPhone to be Released in May, 2013;

Android Version soon to follow

“Caregiving is a tremendous responsibility that not only impacts the lives involved, but the health of the caregiver as well. Unfrazzle is taking on this challenge. It is a simple app that could make a profound difference.”

Matthew Holt, Co-Chairman

Health 2.0 Conference

Silicon Valley, CA (April 16, 2013) – In the United States alone, there are an estimated 65 million family caregivers, who on average spend 20 hours per week on their caregiving responsibilities. As the aging of the U.S. population continues to accelerate, this number will rapidly grow.

An estimated 20 million of these caregivers are in the “high burden” category. They spend an average 50 hours per week on their responsibilities, taking care of seriously impaired family members. These are a diverse group – caring for older people with Alzheimer’s, children with Autism, friends or family with cancer, etc.

Family caregivers are frequently overwhelmed by the never-ending torrent of their caregiving tasks. Organizing tasks and ensuring they are completed is enormously stressful. Sharing tasks with co-caregivers is often complicated.

Many caregivers report feeling alone and unsupported – so much so, their own physical health and mental well-being suffers.

Determined to “uncomplicate and de-stress the lives of family caregivers,” Rajiv Mehta, a veteran Silicon Valley technology developer, has created Unfrazzle, a smartphone app to help caregivers remember, keep track of, and share their caregiving tasks.

Kathy Kelly, Executive Director of the National Center on Caregiving and the Family Caregiver Alliance, who has been following the development of Unfrazzle, says:

“The caregiving community has a tremendous need for a smartphone app like Unfrazzle. I believe it has the potential to unburden caregivers from much of the stress of keeping track of all the tasks they need to do every single day. It will also make it possible for them to easily share some of these tasks with others.”

Unique in the caregiving market, Unfrazzle focuses on easing the mental burden of everyday caregiving. It provides unprecedented flexibility to help users remember and track their day-to-day caregiving tasks; and connectivity, with rich privacy controls, with co-caregivers to keep everyone in-sync.

Unfrazzle users can invite family members and others to join their Unfrazzle network and they can assign different tasks to their co-caregivers.

“Unfrazzle takes a big mental load off your mind as you’re not stressed about whether you’re going to forget to do something,” say Mehta, “and you’ll always know what’s going on with your family members.”

A more indepth look at how Unfrazzle works can be found on the Unfrazzle blog:

Chaos to Serenity: How Unfrazzle Makes it Easier for You to Take Care of Yourself & Your Family

The iPhone version of Unfrazzle is currently undergoing a rigorous beta-test and will be released in the Apple iTunes App store in May. An Android version will soon follow.

OnPage is Chosen by Boston Children’s Hospital to Provide Secure Paging for Smartphones

Doctors can now stay in touch at all times with secure, HIPPA-compliant priority messaging without carrying a traditional pager device

WALTHAM, Mass. -January 22, 2013 —Onset Technology, creator of OnPage™  Priority Messaging, announced today that Boston Children’s Hospital, ranked number one pediatric hospital in the country by U.S. News and World Report, has chosen OnPage Priority Messaging to replace its traditional pagers. The dedicated paging devices carried by physicians everywhere will no longer be necessary as their functionality is integrated into their smartphones. “Using OnPage, this progressive, forward thinking hospital is now bringing the same level of innovation to address its communication needs as it did to medical care for over a century” says Judit Sharon, CEO of Onset Technology.

Traditional pagers are used for alpha-numeric 240 character-max one way communication. Pages sent to traditional pagers require the physician to call back to retrieve the actual message and acknowledge receipt. The OnPage service officiates the process to save precious time; it sends the actual message in its entirety to the intended smartphone and continuously alerts the physician until the message is acknowledged, and automatically keeps the sender informed as to the status of the message, from receipt to actually being read.

Boston Children’s hospital will enjoy many benefits using the OnPage service, including the ability to communicate immediately and securely with its doctors through both cell service and WI-FI, send continuous paging alerts until message receipt, receive actual read acknowledgement automatically when a doctors read their messages, create and manage groups and escalation groups through the OnPage Console, keep a log of the entire communication chain for traceability, and all with HIPAA-compliant encryption for security. Furthermore, since OnPage runs on the most popular smartphones, there is no longer the need for the doctors to carry an additional pager device.

“We are delighted to have the world-renowned Boston Children’s Hospital entrust their priority communications to OnPage,” says Judit Sharon, CEO of Onset Technology, creator of OnPage. “They tested our product against a major competitor over a large array of metrics and found OnPage to be superior. Forward-thinking hospitals and clinics are looking for HIPAA-compliant, secure, reliable, and traceable communication. We are proud to be their solution of choice.”

OnPage converts any iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, or Android device into a secure, fault-tolerant communication system. Unlike traditional pagers, it guarantees that no messages will ever be missed. With OnPage, a message sent is a message received. You can count on it! And just in case, you also get the audit trail to prove it. For more information about OnPage, visit the OnPage website at http://www.OnPage.com;

Critical-Care Patient Monitoring Data Available on Doctors’ iPads and iPhones

GE today announced a significant mobile app for critical-care hospital units: remote doctors can now access more than 100 patient measurements on iPhones and iPads. AirStrip is collaborating with GE to make this widely available.

Called AirStrip PATIENT MONITORING, it helps doctors interact with, manipulate and zoom in on many clinical measurements – e.g. respiratory, cardiac, blood pressure, temperature – and access near-real-time patient information flows. Traditionally, mobile viewing applications do not provide this level of interactivity, offer limited data subsets or do not enable live access to patient data. Now if a nurse requires immediate consultation, doctors can be located anywhere and access critical patient information via their iPhones or iPads.

GE Healthcare and AirStrip Technologies empower busy doctors with the ability to interact with, manipulate and focus on broad range of critical-care information, supporting efficient clinical decision-making on mobile devices

GE Healthcare and AirStrip Technologies today announced AirStrip PATIENT MONITORINGTM, which securely delivers patient monitoring information to critical-care physicians’ iPhones® and iPads.™ AirStrip helps physicians interact with, manipulate and zoom in on more than 100 clinical measurements and access physiologic data and monitoring waveforms, anytime and anywhere.

AirStrip PATIENT MONITORING is designed to help mobile physicians make efficient, informed clinical decisions across and beyond hospital boundaries. The technology adds to GE Healthcare and AirStrip Technologies’ initial joint offering, AirStrip CARDIOLOGYTM, which provides cardiologists with digitally enhanced and comparative cardiac ECG data that can be accessed on iPads and iPhones.

Critical-care physicians must make timely treatment decisions for the hospital’s sickest patients. However, they face increasingly hectic patient care responsibilities, making it difficult to continuously be at the bedside. AirStrip PATIENT MONITORING can serve as an important clinical decision support tool and help expand physicians’ access to patient information. If a nurse requires immediate consultation, physicians can be located anywhere and access critical patient information before determining appropriate care approaches.

Clinicians are early adopters of many wireless devices. According to a Manhattan Research survey, 75 percent of U.S. physicians own some form of Apple device, such as an iPhone or iPad.1

“As doctors increasingly use smartphones and tablets, GE Healthcare is committed to driving convergence between mobile technologies, biomedical devices and clinical information systems,” said Thierry Leclercq, general manager, Life Care Solutions, GE Healthcare. “AirStrip PATIENT MONITORING combines GE Healthcare’s clinical innovations and AirStrip’s powerful mobile health technologies. Empowering doctors with highly interactive patient monitoring information, when and where it is needed, supports physician decision-making and ultimately, patient safety and care.”

Because physicians can directly view and zoom in on live clinical measurements, AirStrip PATIENT MONITORING offers physicians greater decision support than traditional mobile viewing applications which do not enable this level of interaction and provide only limited subsets of data.

AirStrip PATIENT MONITORING is a native application specifically designed for environments where mobile access to critical patient data is essential.

“The mobile technology platform at the heart of AirStrip PATIENT MONITORING can revolutionize the way healthcare is delivered by decentralizing secure, actionable patient information and making it accessible virtually anytime, anywhere,” said Cameron Powell, M.D., President and Chief Medical Officer, AirStrip. “AirStrip PATIENT MONITORING unites a strong user experience with the ability for clinicians to make faster, more informed treatment decisions via their mobile device, which can then improve patient care and overall workflow in ways that doctors are already embracing.”

AirStrip PATIENT MONITORING helps clinicians access near real-time data and historical patient information up to 24 hours ago. It links with GE Healthcare’s portfolio of comprehensive patient monitoring platforms, such as the CARESCAPE* Monitor B850, CARESCAPE* Monitor B650, Solar* and Dash* monitors, to give physicians access to patient waveforms, vital signs and other critical clinical measurements on interactive iPad and iPhone displays. This connectivity is powered via CARESCAPE* Gateway, which interfaces biomedical devices with hospital information systems to streamline otherwise disparate clinical information.

In 2010, AirStrip received FDA clearance of the platform behind AirStrip PATIENT MONITORING, and announced it obtained the CE Mark in January 2012. This technology is designed to promote HIPAA compliance and clinical data is securely stored on hospital servers, rather than residing on doctors’ mobile devices.

U.S. hospitals can now purchase AirStrip PATIENT MONITORING through GE Healthcare. To learn more about AirStrip PATIENT MONITORING, please visit http://www.airstriptech.com/.

GE Healthcare Unveils Imaging Diagnostics…Unplugged

GE Healthcare announced that their Centricity Radiology Mobile Access app has received FDA 510(k) clearance, enabling radiologists to use their iPads and iPhones to remotely diagnose patient CT and MR images.

Centricity Radiology Mobile Access is a native app that allows radiologists to access patient PACS (picture archiving and communication system) images and reports on mobile Apple iOS platforms. The app allows radiologists to provide review and diagnose images while away from their hospital workstation within moments of the scans being taken, reducing test result wait times.

This news comes at an interesting time for the mobile health movement, as the FDA works to prepare guidelines for other mHealth apps looking to gain validation. GE’s announcement is reflective of a larger trend in the healthcare industry, as more physicians are adopting mHealth apps and more app developers are eager for FDA validation – a recent study from ABI Research predicted that the mobile health app market is on track to hit $400 million by 2016 (up from $120 million in 2010).

Centricity Radiology Mobile Access Receives FDA Clearance for Advanced, Diagnostic CT and MR Image Review

CHICAGO — November 30, 2011 GE Healthcare (NYSE: GE) demonstrated new capabilities for its Centricity* Radiology Mobile Access platform today at RSNA 2011, enabling radiologists to use their iPad® and iPhone® devices to remotely diagnose select patient images from Centricity PACS.

Centricity Radiology Mobile Access 2.0 is the industry’s only mobile product with clearance for primary diagnosis that accesses images and reports from Centricity PACS. This new mode of access removes a sizable productivity barrier for an increasingly mobile field.

Centricity Radiology Mobile Access 2.0 demonstrates GE Healthcare’s leadership position in the field of mobile health and portability, while safeguarding patient privacy by not downloading any personal data to the client device. It also provides access to past exams with the speed and precision Centricity PACS users have come to count on.

“This application and its diagnostic clearance provide further validation of our continued investment in our Centricity PACS platform,” said Don Woodlock, Vice President and General Manager of GE Healthcare IT. “As a native application for the Apple iOS and Android operating systems, Centricity Radiology Mobile Access requires very little training and, we believe, provides a more productive user experience versus an emulated Windows application that was designed to be driven by a mouse. Today, Centricity PACS stores one in five exams in the US. These advanced wireless capabilities will only expand its utility.”

The diagnostic clearance for Centricity Radiology Mobile Access 2.0 is limited to computed tomography and magnetic resonance exams on an iPad or iPhone when not in proximity to a PACS workstation.

Device Messaging connects clinicians quickly, quietly and securely

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – May 25, 2011 — (BUSINESS WIRE) — EXTENSION, INC. announced that it has expanded its suite of solution offerings to include Device Messaging as a standalone solution.  “We have identified a need for marrying the corporate phone systems in healthcare that nurses typically use, with the smartphone platforms utilized by physicians for more efficient communication,” said Todd Plesko, CEO of EXTENSION.  ”Most of us use text messaging in our daily lives – EXTENSION enables clinicians to securely emulate this functionality on their hospital’s communications network.”

EXTENSION Device Messaging includes the following features and benefits:

  • Individual or Group Messaging/Texting
  • Pre-defined or Custom Messaging/Texting
  • Interactive Messaging – instant, two-way communication
  • Message/Text Forwarding
  • Intuitive, easily manageable interface
  • HIPAA-compliancy – authentication, encryption and logging

Device Messaging addresses a number of common complaints among providers of health services, primarily: the ability to quickly locate another clinician treating the same patient, the ability to contact another clinician via text without worrying that protected health information (PHI) is being shared in violation of federal law, and the ability to connect with another health care provider without disturbing the healing environment of patients. EXTENSION Device Messaging uses native apps on the iPhone and Android platforms to allow for secure, logged and auditable messaging between clinicians.

Device Messaging is integral to the forward-looking medical facility that is seeking to replace outdated pagers with feature-rich devices. EXTENSION is also capable of delivering messages to ANY device including iPhone, Vocera badges, Android, and Cisco and Ascom handsets, which allows healthcare professionals to continue using the device that they are already comfortable with. EXTENSION, INC. is planning to release support for even more IP phone system devices and smartphones over the coming months.

According to Plesko, “What we take for granted in our personal lives – the ability to send a quick, text-based message to let someone know we are running late to an engagement; to let our significant other know we will pick up dinner; to let our children know what time we will pick them up from practice – should also be available to us in our professional lives. Healthcare professionals in particular have a pressing need to connect with each other quickly, but they must be able to do so without compromising sensitive patient information. EXTENSION enables them to do just that.”

Ekahau Extends RTLS Beyond the Building Using Wi-Fi Enabled iPhones and Android Phones

Ekahau Inc., the worldwide leader in high performance Wi-Fi-based Real Time Location Systems (RTLS) announced that Ekahau RTLS customers can now use their iPhone or Android smart phones to extend location tracking capabilities to areas outside their defined wireless local area network (WLAN).

For example, Ekahau is currently piloting use of iPhones and Android smart phones with ambulance drivers, to give hospitals a way to track medical equipment, patients and staff who leave the hospital site. Other planned uses include transportation logistics for high-value assets and verifying inventory of on-board cargo.

Ekahau Transforms Smart Phones Into RTLS “Hot Spots” to Locate Assets and Individuals Outside the WLAN’s Reach

RESTON, Virginia, April 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ –

Ekahau Inc., the worldwide leader in high performance Wi-Fi-based Real Time Location Systems (RTLS), today announced that Ekahau RTLS customers can now use their iPhone or Android smart phones to extend location tracking capabilities to areas outside their defined wireless local area network (WLAN). By using the smart phones as an additional wireless access point, this new functionality gives Ekahau RTLS users a way to track assets during transport or between Wi-Fi enabled facilities.

“Many of our customers with multi-site or mobile operations have been asking for an inexpensive way to set up a ‘hotspot’ to extend RTLS presence outside of their WLAN coverage area for managing inventory and accounting for personnel,” said Tuomo Rutanen, Ekahau’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing and Business Development. “With our latest innovation, a Wi-Fi-enabled iPhone or Android smart phone now can serve as an extension of a Wi-Fi network’s RTLS capability, giving users real-time location and status of critical staff and assets anywhere in the world.”

To transform the iPhone or Android handsets into a portable Wi-Fi access point, Ekahau RTLS users turn on the tethering feature of their smart phone. With this feature activated, any Ekahau Wi-Fi tags in the vicinity of the phone are able to communicate their presence back to the Ekahau RTLS Controller location-tracking engine, which can be installed on a server anywhere in the world as a cloud-based RTLS.

Adding ‘Sight’ to Wi-Fi Blind Spots

By using the iPhone or Android handsets as ad hoc Wi-Fi hotspots, Ekahau RTLS customers can track assets even in blind spots in their logistics or supply chain – such as in temporary staging areas or mobile environments such as transport trucks, vans or ambulances.

Demonstrations at RFID Journal LIVE!

GE Healthcare Expands Mobile Access to Electronic Medical Records

Company’s Focus on mHealth Demonstrated at HIMSS11 Conference; Offers Free iPad® to New Centricity Advance Customers

ORLANDO – Feb 23, 2011 – General Electric, an industry leader in the adoption of mobile technology, demonstrated the extension of its healthcare IT portfolio to mobile devices and tablet computing at this week’s Health Information Management and Systems Society (HIMSS) Conference in Orlando. The company featured remote access to its portfolio of electronic medical records (EMRs) for physician practices, including Centricity* Advance and Centricity Practice Solution, on the Apple® iPad and iPhone®.

Across its business, GE Healthcare is focused on shifting the architecture of its proven software solutions to web technologies, which lighten the application footprint and bring clinicians the benefits of anytime, anywhere access to critical patient data. Today, Centricity Advance and Centricity Practice Solution EMR customers are using a range of mobile devices with Internet access to view patient medical records such as history, medication and problem lists, and allergies, helping them reduce potential medical errors and take care of urgent patient questions quickly, even in the evening or on weekends.

“GE has some of the best technologies in the world, and now we have the mobile platforms to help customers do even better things with our EMR solutions,” said Jim Corrigan, Vice President and General Manager of GE Healthcare IT. “We can make something easy to use, but the back end can be extremely powerful. The possibilities for rolling out iPad applications to the physician community are truly exciting, and we’re pleased to preview those solutions at HIMSS.”

At HIMSS, GE Healthcare is demonstrating the iPad applications it plans to roll out this year. These native iPad app versions of Centricity Advance and Centricity Practice Solution will take full advantage of the mobile device’s capabilities, easing the flow of information and adding features such as flicking through the application and zooming in on areas of the screen. The company also launched a limited-time promotion, offering a free iPad to physicians who purchase Centricity Advance before March 31, 2011**. These customers will have immediate access to the Centricity Advance iPad EMR application when it is available, at no additional charge.

“By accessing Centricity Advance on the iPad, providers are able to view the most important patient information and enter clinical notes from the patient appointment room, from home, on the road – wherever makes the most sense and is most convenient,” said Chittaranjan Mallepeddi, Vice President and General Manager of GE Healthcare’s Centricity Advance business. “Not only are we leading the industry in mobile application development, but we’re making the technology more accessible to physicians looking to adopt an EMR now, with the inclusion of a free iPad for new customers.”

Centricity Advance and Centricity Practice Solution are part of GE Healthcare’s portfolio of integrated EMR, practice management and patient portal solutions for physicians. In a separate announcement at HIMSS11, GE Healthcare announced the launch of Centricity Practice Solution version 10, which features integrated quality reporting dashboards that are included in the mobile access offering.

Centricity Advance is a web-based EMR solution, built as a true Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) cloud computing platform to make the solution affordable, easy to use and flexible to meet the needs of growing physician practices. For more information on the Centricity Advance iPad promotion, visit www.gehealthcare.com/iPadPromo.

GE Healthcare is also showing Centricity Imaging Mobile Access for PACS, which will help to enhance patient care by providing true “anywhere, anytime” un-tethered access enabling Centricity PACS users to pull images and reports from an Apple or Android smartphone or tablet. The application for this solution is currently 510(k) pending at FDA.

Agilex Receives VAi2 Award from the Department of Veterans Affairs to Advance Veterans Healthcare

Project Extends Capabilities of the VistA Electronic Health Record System to Mobile Devices

ORLANDO, FL – HIMSS11 (BOOTH 431) – February 21, 2011Agilex, a leading provider of mission and technology solutions to the national security, healthcare and public sectors, announced today it is a recipient of a VA Innovation Initiative (VAi2) award from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).  Agilex was selected to lead a project at the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center that will extend core capabilities of the VistA electronic health record (EHR) system to mobile devices.  This project will serve as a pilot for VA to evaluate strategies and technologies for providing clinicians with secure, on-demand access to clinical information via smart phones and tablets.

“We are excited about the opportunity to explore the value of displaying critical data from a veteran’s medical record on a mobile platform such as the iPhone or iPad,” said Dr. Neil Evans, Associate Chief of Staff for Informatics at the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  “We anticipate that providing real-time, on-the-go information to providers and patients at the point of care will translate into better quality of care and improved satisfaction, both for our patients and the healthcare team. We plan to pilot the mobile health platform in the hospital on medical rounds and in the operating suite, and outside the hospital for secure delivery of vital data to on-call physicians.

Leveraging elements of the Agilex Mobile Health Platform, Agilex will work with VA to integrate VistA with popular mobile devices, such as the Apple iOS (iPhone and iPad) platform.  By doing so, it will provide clinicians with on-demand access to a patient’s medical history, including demographics, laboratory data, medications, allergies, appointments, and problem lists. The project will also integrate clinical calendars and secure messaging with the devices to streamline scheduling and information exchange.  Another key focus will be on addressing device security to achieve compliance with federal and VA directives.

“VA has long been at the forefront of healthcare innovation.  Particularly noteworthy is their ability to develop highly effective and valuable systems that scale to meet enterprise requirements without compromising clinical quality or workflow,” said Larry Albert, Healthcare Sector President, Agilex Technologies, Inc.  “Agilex is a leading provider of both healthcare and mobility solutions to the federal government.  We are excited by the opportunity to share our expertise with VA as they seek to further empower their providers.”
