Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Speeds Time to Answers Necessary to Reduce Costs and Increase Quality of Care
Leading pediatric care provider reduces reporting time by 65% and eliminates 12-day waiting period for research-related queries
Radnor, Penn – February 22, 2011 – QlikTech (NASDAQ:QLIK), a leader in Business DiscoveryTM – user-driven Business Intelligence, today announced that Children’s Hospital of Atlanta (CHOA), one of the largest clinical care providers for children in the U.S., is successfully using QlikView to empower users with intuitive operations, finance and research analysis. With QlikView, 500 users can now leverage the invaluable data that was locked in dozens of different data sources and static reports and CHOA has reduced report generation time by approximately 65%.
As is often the case at many large organizations, years of providing analysis and reports with nearly all of the traditional BI platforms had left the CHOA BI team with expensive implementation schedules, scope reductions and a dissatisfied user base, which ultimately led to a strained relationship between IT and business and clinical staff who need the information. When CHOA’s cardiology unit, Sibley Heart Center Cardiology, independently evaluated and selected QlikView to replace IBM Cognos, CHOA management saw that Sibley users were able to run reports and analysis in minutes rather than waiting a week for answers. CHOA decided to conduct a project with QlikView partner IPC Global and gave QlikView 30 days to replace its current vendor’s OLAP cube.

And today, after only four months of using QlikView, we have developed more applications and dashboards than we had in two years with our other BI tools.”
CHOA is using QlikView for operations, finance and research analysis to improve decision making in key areas, such as:
Revenue Management — Equivalent to the information previously available in 50 different static reports, CHOA executives, directors and managers now have a single view of revenue billed each day, by each of its three hospitals, by each service and sub service line, and against targeted goals, disease codes and acting physicians. Before QlikView, each report would have taken approximately 30 hours to build. Now, all of that detail — and more — is available in a dashboard that was built in a month.
Service Line Spending — In a single dashboard, users can analyze expenses for each service line, down to a level of detail that would have been previously impossible to obtain due to the sheer number of data sources. This QlikView application targets spending variances and highlights how to gain efficiencies and improve service.
Research Hypothesis Discovery — Integrating data that dates back to 1985, QlikView now enables CHOA research users to query across multiple databases for population identification, diseases, demographics, visits, lab orders and results. In the past, researchers and physicians had to wait 4-6 weeks for the reports and detail they needed for their grant proposals. Today, they can instantly access a portal that offers a complete picture of the clinical experience, especially the diagnosis-treatment-outcome relationship, and better target research studies.
Waste Reduction and Cost Effectiveness — Using historical data from clinic management and accounting systems, the QlikView application allows CHOA management to pinpoint areas of ineffectiveness and maximize staffing schedules based on cycle times, labor operations and supplies utilization.
When put to the test in head-to-head evaluations, QlikView quickly exposes the flaws of traditional OLAP cube technology and the limitations of the recent in-memory entrants that were not designed with in-memory at their core. QlikView’s Business Discovery platform requires fewer resources, less time and lower cost to deploy and maintain for a more flexible and scalable solution.
