HIMSS and ACCE Recognize Paul H. Frisch for Excellence in Clinical Engineering and IT

CHICAGO (January 15, 2013) – Paul H. Frisch, PhD, FHIMSS, received the 2012 ACCE-HIMSS Excellence in Clinical Engineering and Information Technology Synergies Award, a joint award sponsored by ACCE and HIMSS. The Boards of Directors of both organizations selected the recipient.

The award recognizes individuals who have best demonstrated leadership in promoting or implementing significant synergies between the clinical engineering and information technology professions.  Award recipients also must be members in good standing of both organizations.  Nominees for the award are honored for professional or technical contributions to the professions, such as research, development of a new process or product, a paper of significance, and “trailblazing’ work in a new application of clinical engineering and IT.

“The American College of Clinical Engineering is very proud to support the selection of Dr. Frisch for this award.  His work is an excellent model for the new direction that practitioners of clinical engineering need to take as more and more of the technologies we work with incorporate computer-based functionality and integrate with health IT systems.  Dr. Frisch is to be commended for his forward-thinking leadership in our profession,” says Jim Keller, President of ACCE.

Dr. Frisch has over 30 years of professional experience and contributions to the field; and is a long-standing of member of HIMSS & ACCE. He has educated clinical staff, administration and hospital thought leaders about diverse technologies and the synergies required to develop, deploy and manage complex systems in the healthcare setting.

As a faculty member and Chief of Biomedical Engineering in the Department of Medical Physics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and a visiting professor at Binghamton University, Dr. Frisch is also a researcher. One of his research interests has been the transition of clinical devices from stand-alone to networked systems sharing and distributing information between clinical applications and devices. He has extensively researched how these devices have also moved to expand their functionality to use wireless technologies (WiFi, etc.) as medium for conveying this critical information. As these clinical devices and systems transition between the boundaries of engineering and information technology, it becomes critical for the industry to develop a strong synergy between information technologies and biomedical / clinical engineering.

To further demonstrate this complex interaction, Frisch designed the Intelligent Hospital™ Pavilion, an interactive exhibit first introduced at HIMSS11.This addition to the exhibit floor has helpedraise awareness of, and educated the healthcare industry on, the many applications of RFID and RTLS technologies integrated within clinical scenarios, including the required synergy between information technologies and biomedical/clinical engineering.

Dr. Frisch will be honored at the 2013 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition Awards Recognition Banquet on March 5, 2013, from 6:30 – 9 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans during the 2013 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition. Tickets for the dinner can be purchased on the HIMSS13 website.

“The connection and integration between clinical engineering and information technology come to the forefront with this joint ACCE-HIMSS award, as indicated by the accomplishments of this year’s recipient Paul H. Frisch, PhD, FHIMSS.  All of us at HIMSS congratulate Dr. Frisch for his ongoing contributions to the Society, and specifically, to HIMSS13, where he will speak at the Clinical Engineering & IT Symposium and has already provided his expertise for one of our large, interactive exhibits,” says H. Stephen Lieber, CAE, HIMSS President & CEO.

eProtex Launches New Network Counterintelligence Solution at HIMSS11

Data Security Company Responds To Evolving Demands For Secured Healthcare Information With ePShield

(Feb. 21, 2011) INDIANAPOLIS—eProtex, a data security company specializing in the hidden risks of connected devices, announced at the HIMSS11 conference in Orlando, Fla. the availability of the first network counterintelligence solution for data security – ePShield.

At 10 times the speed and value of traditional intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDS/IPS), ePShield secures health IT networks and connected devices, delivering 100 percent visibility into information flowing between protected nodes. Meanwhile, its packet filtration, encryption analysis and verification mechanisms act as a “force field” around sensitive data, ensuring HIPAA compliance.

Designed for high-use, clinical imaging medical device networks, ePShield allows clinicians to access data faster, without sacrificing image quality. Its toolkit includes analysis, compliance enforcement, packet filtration, firewall, router, end-to-end encryption and IDS/IPS capabilities for early, accurate detection and prevention of threats and vulnerabilities.

At approximately 1/10 the cost of competing solutions, ePShield includes a unique team of “watchdogs” following a client’s network traffic 24/7.

“Our cross-functional team of IT and clinical engineering experts are uniquely equipped to discern how the network, individual medical devices and HIPAA requirements all impact one another,” said Earl Reber, executive director of eProtex. “This team monitors our client’s network traffic to accurately predict and counter threats so clients don’t have to figure things out on their own or pay added support fees.”

As healthcare standards evolve, so do the threats competing for the resources of healthcare organizations. While uncovering the right data security strategies can seem daunting, the real issue is the cost of remaining vulnerable to patient data breaches and impaired network performance. For more information on the availability of ePShield visit booth 1506 at HIMSS11 in Orlando  or call 317-366-2183.

Hitachi Data Systems Transforms the Delivery of Patient Care with New Solution for Healthcare Providers

Hitachi Clinical Repository Leverages Metadata to Improve the Interoperability and Long-term Value of All Clinical Data

HIMSS11, ORLANDO — February 21, 2011 — Hitachi Data Systems Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT), today introduced a new solution for healthcare providers to improve clinical decision making and resulting patient care. Hitachi Clinical Repository (HCR) is an information management solution that transforms raw medical data and images into meaningful information, independent of the source applications. Leveraging the company’s leading intelligent data and storage management technologies, HCR creates a metadata repository based on any information system and gives healthcare providers a consolidated view of all relevant patient information. As a result, healthcare organizations can increase interoperability, significantly reduce costs while improving access to data, and better utilize electronic health records (EHRs) to meet important government healthcare initiatives.

Today’s healthcare facilities are faced with explosive growth of medical information and images from every clinical department. Most of this important patient data contains additional underlying data, called metadata, that is stored in a static, proprietary format inaccessible to other applications and therefore remains unutilized. Healthcare providers are under growing pressure to take full advantage of their data – and the application silos the data reside in – to optimize how they make important patient care decisions. Creating and managing a central, integrated metadata repository of patient information is an integral component to improve facility-wide data management. Unlike current Vendor Neutral Archives (VNAs) that focus only on medical images, Hitachi Clinical Repository consolidates all patient data, standardizes the formats across disparate applications and then provides this data to EHR and portals in a single, unified view that can then be mined intelligently and distributed centrally and securely.

“Hitachi Clinical Repository takes the concept of Medical Imaging VNAs and expands it to include the entire healthcare facility,” said Bill Burns, vice president, Health and Life Sciences, Hitachi Data Systems. “Its unique capability is adding patient metadata to image and non-image data, at any point in the lifecycle, to restore the long-term value to this most critical class of data. By seamlessly consolidating and presenting all relevant health and business data in a single, longitudinal record, healthcare providers can now get the most comprehensive view of their patients, regardless of which information system the data resides in. HCR enables providers to be more efficient, cost effective and innovative – it truly transforms the delivery of patient care.”

Hitachi Clinical Repository: One Patient View, Facility-wide

HCR virtualizes image and non-image data from any information system and creates a metadata repository for healthcare providers to have a facility-wide consolidated view of all relevant patient information. It is comprised of several Hitachi storage technologies including Hitachi Content Platform (HCP), Hitachi NAS Platform, powered by BlueArc® (HNAS), and Hitachi Data Discovery Suite (HDDS). HCR is a standards-based interoperability framework that accepts multiple data types, parses the data and indexes the metadata, enabling interoperability between external applications such as EHRs or clinical portals.

Hitachi Data Systems provides a complete data transformation service to capture appropriate data from the many information sources within an enterprise, index that data as well as its file system, application and customer metadata, and then make that data available to external sources through the platform’s API architecture.

Business rules, privacy and security requirements, quality and audit assessments, governance and workflow processes can all be applied against the indexed data for further improvements to patient care. Additional benefits of Hitachi Clinical Repository include:

  • Indexing and sophisticated metadata analysis of more than 50 different document and 400 multi-purpose internet mail extensions (MIME) types, their content and possible different levels of information provides unprecedented interoperability.
  • Significant reduction in waste, operational and maintenance costs while improving access to data and increasing efficiency.
  • Metadata indexing improves the organization, accessibility, discoverability and long term value of data.
  • Physical adoption and utilization of a single longitudinal patient record through EHR and portal solutions enables enterprise adoption and utilization of EHR solutions.

“Creating and managing metadata repositories are important components for improving enterprise data management and information exploitation,” said David Floyer, CTO and co-founder, Wikibon. “HDS has incorporated its leading edge technologies into Hitachi Clinical Repository to provide a much richer metadata capture by opening and interrogating every type of object (not just standard containers) during the acquisition process. This will give clinicians improved access to information related to the patient’s situation and better decision making. HCR is a model for addressing the general data management challenges within IT of extending the value of data beyond the applications that create it.”

Success Story: Klinikum-Wels Grieskirchen

As one of the largest hospitals in Austria with more than 3,500 employees across 4 locations, Klinikum Wels-Grieskirchen needed a way to make its complex and siloed processes more automated and efficient. It now leverages HCR to consolidate patient information for its lab, radiology and unstructured content management systems, and associated metadata, to provide a consolidated view to its National eHealth application and the hospital’s own clinician portal.

“Klinikum-Wels selected HCR to give providers the right information, at right time, in the right place and in the correct format,” said Elmar Flamme, CIO, Klinikum-Wels-Grieskirchen. “The ability to search for information across all deployed systems, irrespective of vendor or location, is the key. Hitachi Clinical Repository gives us the flexibility to easily integrate any kind of clinical system into a facility-wide archive, creating a foundation to offer information for all clinical and administrative use cases and provide much better patient care.”

HDS at HIMSS11

HIMSS11 attendees can see Hitachi Clinical Repository in action in the Hitachi Data Systems Booth #6742 this week at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. Today, Bill Burns of HDS will also highlight Hitachi Clinical Repository and how to use metadata from multiple information systems to overcome today’s top information challenges. For more information on HIMSS11, visit: www.himssconference.org

Availability

Hitachi Clinical Repository is available for hospitals of all sizes, hospital groups, integrated delivery networks (IDN) and health information exchanges.

Sandlot to Debut Quality Reporting and Measures Application at HIMSS11

Community Quality Reporting and Measures Delivered

To Physicians at the Point-of-Care

Fort Worth, TX, Feb. 22, 2011 – Sandlot, LLC, a healthcare solutions company founded by practicing physicians, will debut SandlotQRM®, a quality reporting and measures application at HIMSS11, the prestigious annual conference for the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society in Orlando, Fla. (Feb. 20 – 24, 2011). SandlotQRM helps physicians integrate care delivery and “move the needle” on quality as they transform their clinical practice in the new era of accountable care.

With SandlotQRM, physicians will have the tools they need to improve quality outcomes before, during, and after the patient’s visit. Physicians and other clinicians can:

  • Prospectively track patients falling outside care guidelines
  • Deliver care recommendations based on the patient’s electronic, longitudinal community health record at the point of care
  • Retrospectively monitor performance through the lens of HEDIS, PQRI, EHR Meaningful Use, and other measures.

SandlotQRM is integrated with SandlotConnect®, a health information exchange (HIE) solution developed and supported by Sandlot, LLC. SandlotConnect is a unique point of care solution – a blending of HIE technology with quality management tools – enabling healthcare providers to integrate care delivery and achieve measurable improvement in quality outcomes. SandlotQRM can integrate with any source of patient clinical information, including: HIEs, claims systems, or electronic medical records.

Until now, physicians and healthcare organizations relied on fragmented retrospective reviews of patient data to manage care. SandlotQRM will help ensure that doctors exceed their quality objectives by presenting patient-measures that are important to their specialty. The web tool enables physicians to determine what patients are not meeting the measures of quality care and allows doctors to take immediate action, such as: scheduling a diagnostic test, a procedure, e-prescribing or ordering a laboratory test. This will enhance the physician’s ability to treat patients more successfully at the point-of-care and increase patient satisfaction rates.

Sandlot’s quality module will also serve as a vital benchmarking tool for physicians. Doctors can determine how successful they are in meeting their quality objectives compared to national targets and other physicians utilizing Sandlot’s HIE application, SandlotConnect. This will be beneficial for doctors in helping them develop alternative protocols to provide better overall treatment plans and cost effective care for their patients. The current Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) incentive program in place will create increased demand for SandlotQRM.  Payments are rewarded to those physicians who satisfactorily report their specified measures during a reporting period.

The emerging era of accountable care induces hospitals and health systems to reduce costs and improve long-term financial objectives by participating in an accountable care organization (ACO). Based on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), an ACO is described as collaborations that include groups of healthcare providers, hospitals, and others. SandlotQRM is the cornerstone of an ACO because of the prospective, point-of-care, and retrospective quality measurement reporting that will support a profitable and sustainable patient care organization.

From a health plan perspective, Sandlot’s quality module will help insurers meet their business objectives. Insurers can meet their Med-Loss Ratio (MLR) requirements by utilizing its sophisticated data analysis and population reporting capabilities so they can be defined as a medical cost. To assist health plans in reaching CMS Five-Star status, SandlotQRM also provides analytical data on HEDIS measures. NCQA publishes the top 20 private health plans, with similar lists for the top 10 Medicaid and Medicare plans each year. HEDIS scores are a significant factor in ranking each plan.

SandlotQRM, will be available for limited live demonstrations February 20-24th at HIMSS11. iPhone and iPad applications will be available for clinical use once SandlotQRM is generally available March, 2011.

KLAS Performance Ratings Begin New Era with Infrastructure Market Research

KLAS is announcing a new report being published today at HIMSS11. This report is an inaugural report on the infrastructure market area that KLAS recently began monitoring. The report focuses on wireless communication systems. A few highlights and the press release are below.

- Some of the findings in the wireless communication report show that executives are adopting VoIP technology cautiously with many questioning the best way to incorporate wireless technology at their facility.

- As technology quickly advances and familiarity with wireless VoIP increases, providers are looking to do much more than just voice communications with their mobile VoIP phones.

- The vendors included in the study are Ascom, Avaya, Cisco, Polycom and Voicera.

- KLAS began monitoring the infrastructure market area in October 2010 Research with five market segments: communications, storage environment, computing infrastructure, nurse call and networks. This wireless communication system report is the first published report in that research area.

Internal Wireless Voice Communication Systems is KLAS’ inaugural report in the new infrastructure market research category

ORLANDO, Fla. – February 21, 2011 – KLAS today announced its new infrastructure market research category that will provide KLAS performance ratings for infrastructure vendors. Research in the new category will begin with five market segments: communications, storage environment, computing infrastructure, nurse call and networks. KLAS began conducting research for the communications market segment in October 2010. The first infrastructure report, Internal Wireless Voice Communication Systems: Improving Patient Care and Satisfaction by Staying Connected,” is being released today during HIMSS. The report specifies which vendors provide the most reliable wireless VoIP solutions. The vendors included in the study are Ascom, Avaya, Cisco, Polycom and Voicera.

Research for the wireless report was gathered from more than 110 provider organizations and focuses on both strengths and weaknesses of the vendors. “Some of the findings show that executives are adopting VoIP technology cautiously with many questioning the best way to incorporate wireless technology at their facility,” said Jeremy Goff, author of the report. “The study explores to what degree providers are configuring their wireless VoIP systems and how wireless technology is being used to improve patient care and better meet clinician expectations.”

Several key findings in the report indicate that as technology quickly advances and familiarity with wireless VoIP increases, providers are looking to do much more than just voice communications with their mobile VoIP phones. Additional functionalities being explored include data and graphics transfers, alerts, monitoring and seamless interfaces to multiple clinical devices and applications. It was also found that device integration leads to improved care. Providers with at least one integration point to their wireless VoIP device were 52 percent more likely to report major or moderate improvement in patient care.

Mike Smith, General Manager of Infrastructure Research said, “KLAS will target data collection in communications, storage environment and nurse call during the first two quarters of 2011. As we work with providers and collect research, we expect that additional research needs will be identified.”

The new report, “Internal Wireless Voice Communication Systems: Improving Patient Care and Satisfaction by Staying Connected” is available for purchase at www.KLASresearch.com/reports.
