Mayo Clinic and Tech Entrepreneurs Join Forces to Launch Ambient Clinical Analytics, First-Ever Bedside Decision Support Platform to Transform Patient Critical Care

Company backed by $1.1M in seed funding from prestigious Silicon Valley investors, The Social+Capital Partnership, and established health nonprofits: Rock Health and Mayo Clinic

ROCHESTER, MN and SAN FRANCISCO (February 17, 2014) – Today, a Mayo Clinic academic clinical team and seasoned technology entrepreneurs are launching a new company called Ambient Clinical Analytics. The company is focused on providing critical decision support tools for ICU, Operating Room and Emergency Departments right at the patient’s bedside. Ambient Clinical Analytics brings together a trifecta of powerful new technologies, seeded from Mayo Clinic, to change the way critical care providers operate, offering real-time access to important process-of-care information and analytics, lessening the likelihood of procedural failures and saving lives.

The following three technologies are at the core of Ambient Clinical Analytics’ analytics platform for providers:

·      AWARE (Ambient Warning and Response Evaluation) is a clinical EMR tool that reduces information overload by using analytics to filter relevant patient data and supporting best-care practices for ICUs and Operating Rooms.

·      Mayo Clinic YES Board® is a multi-patient management tool that provides real-time situational awareness for Emergency Departments and hospital Pediatric departments.

·      Syndromic Surveillance provides Smart alerts or“sniffers” that address important clinical problems such as sepsis.

·      The Synthesis technology connects patients’ data with mobile devices.  This is a component for both the YES Board and AWARE.

Ambient Clinical Analytics is backed by Silicon Valleyventure capitalists, The Social+Capital Partnership, and established healthcare organizations Rock Health and Mayo Clinic. Al Berning will lead the company as its Chief Executive Officer. Al is a technology veteran of 20 years, having led PEMSTAR to an IPO in 2000 and helmed LiquidCool Solutions from 2007 to 2012. He is joined by a world-class founding clinical team from Mayo Clinic, including physicians from many specialties.

“Healthcare providers need efficient and organized tools at their fingertips in order to increasepatient safety. Ambient Clinical Analytics is providing the real-time bedside and emergency room technology to accomplish this, which in turn leaves both the provider and patient more satisfied,” said Al Berning, CEO of Ambient Clinical Analytics. “This is a unique opportunity to truly transform how patients are treated. We all desire an organized healthcare operation especially when the emergency department or ICU are involved. Ambient Analytics provides solutions developed by clinicians for clinicians to accomplish this.”

“The amount of data behind AWARE is vast, but unlike any other system I’ve used, AWARE shows me what I need to see, at the point of care, organized in the way I think. As a result, I can approach patients in a more standardized and organized fashion,” said John M. Litell, DO, attending physician, emergency and critical care medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and assistant director of emergency medicine research at St.Vincent Hospital.

“The impetus behind creating AWARE was that I would arrive in the ICU and spend the first hours just coming to terms with basic patient facts. Other physicians face the same situation. By applying technology to this situation, we found a way to hit the ground running. The application was designed to make transitions of care safer and more efficient,” added Brian Pickering, M.D., a founding clinical team member for Ambient Clinical Analytics.

Ambient Clinical Analytic offers two scientifically validated solutions. The first is the patented Septic Shock Sniffer and thesecond is the patent pending Ventilator-Induced Lung Injury (VILI) Sniffer. The solutions were developed by founding clinical team members  Vitaly Herasevich M.D. Ph.D. and Ognjen Gajic M.D.

Vern Smith, M.D., and Andy Boggust, M.D.  founding clinical team members, said, “The fast-paced environment of emergency rooms requires the ability to rapidly assess the needs of patients, the severity of their illnesses, assign staff, and determine next steps. The intent of the YES Board was to make all of those things  available at a glance without moving in and out of different applications, allowing for improved patient satisfaction and the ability to deliver care at a lower institutional cost.”

Ambient Clinical Analytics will be exhibiting at HIMSS, the healthcare IT event of the year, in Orlando, Florida from February 23-27. The conference is known as a launch pad for cutting edge new products and services in the health IT industry.

Mayo Clinic and Drs. Pickering, Heresevich, Gajic, Smith and Boggust have financial interest in the products mentioned in this press release. Revenue Mayo receives is used to support its not-for-profit mission in patient care, education and research.

Lumiata Raises $4 Million in Series A Financing from Khosla Ventures

The World’s First Medical Graph Aims to Revolutionize Health Care with Big Data Driven Medical Science and Predictive Analytics

San Mateo, California – January 8, 2013 – Lumiata, a provider of predictive analytics around medical science and patient data, announced today that it closed $4 million in Series A financing from Khosla Ventures. This funding will be used to refine and commercialize the health care industry’s first medical graph-based predictive analytics engine, which is currently being piloted by major hospital networks and health insurance carriers to deliver betterinformed patient care.

“There is little debate that health care delivery is lacking today – both in its quality and its affordability. Lumiata has created a new predictive engine to help turn the practice of medicine into a science,” said Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures, a leading investor in transformational health care. “Lumiata’s medical graph helps providers ensure they’re giving the right care, at the right time, from the right person so they can deliver better value-based health to more patients.”

Formerly known as MEDgle, Lumiata’s mission is to democratize medical science so that all kinds of medical staff – from advice nurses, to physician’s assistants, to doctors – can apply higher quality health care at a lower cost. The company collects massive amounts of medical science data, organizes it in rich, inter-connected graphs similar to Facebook’s social graph, and produces key insights for patient care. Health providers can run anonymized medical records, genetic information or sensor data through Lumiata’s graph to receive hyper-personalizedpredictions and recommendations for individual patients.

With instant access to Lumiata’s real-time predictive and prescriptive analytics regarding symptoms, medications, risk factors and diagnoses, first-line staff can elevate their day-today care. The engine’s guidelines and protocols help nurses easily determine what questions to ask a patient and make knowledgeable decisions before and during a patient visit, such as which labs to order or which procedures to recommend. This approach also maximizes doctors’ productivity by marshaling the finest medical science at their fingertips, so they can determine diagnoses and treatment plans earlier and faster than ever before.

“We believe that data-driven medical decisions can drive high quality, optimized care at a much lower cost,” said Ash Damle, founder and CEO of Lumiata. “At Lumiata, we’re providing the best of medical science on-demand with a ‘GPS’-like health navigation system. First we triangulate an individual’s health, and then we calculate their best routes to getting and staying healthy. These small, but life-changing insights are the result of lots of sophisticated big data science.”

Behind the scenes, Lumiata’s technology ensures accurate health care predictions by combining the brilliance of the best physicians with the analytic power of big data. The company has crunched over 160 million data points from hundreds of relevant sources – including over seven million pages from textbooks and medical journals, and more than 100 gigabits of public data from the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institutes of Health, the World Health Organization and more – and spent over 20,000 physician hours to confirm the quality of its resulting insights. Its algorithms turn raw data about tens of thousands of symptoms, diagnoses, procedures and medications across ages, genders and lifestyles into curated, usable bigknowledge to dramatically improve the delivery of health care.

Lumiata’s real-time predictive analytics are available via Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). These APIs can be used to pull both aggregate and specific patient insights into the systems, devices and daily workflows that hospitals and insurers already use during patient interactions. In the future, Lumiata will also leverage its medical graph to give individuals the data they need to optimize their own health and wellness every day.

Lumiata’s management team and advisory board include board-certified physicians, data scientists, and evidence-based medical researchers. Its CEO, Ash Damle, founded the company to synthesize fifteen years of research on applying practical artificial intelligence. His background includes developing web-scale artificial intelligence solutions at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the U.S. Navy, California’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and J.Crew. In addition, Euan Thomson, investment partner at Khosla Ventures, is joining the company’s board of directors and brings over fifteen years of experience as a scientist, physicist and researcher in the United Kingdom’s health care system.

To produce accurate insights and predictions related to symptoms, diagnoses, procedures and medications, Lumiata developed the world’s first medical graph, which organizes and analyzes hundreds of millions of valuable data points. OhioHealth Selects Health Care DataWorks for Enterprise Data Warehouse and Healthcare Analytics

Another leading health care system has turned to Health Care DataWorks for the healthcare analytics it needs to make more informed decisions.

OhioHealth, a 17 hospital and 21 health and surgery center system based in Columbus, Ohio has entered into a multi-year agreement with HCD to implement its KnowledgeEdge™ Enterprise Data Warehouse.  OhioHealth joins Cedars-Sinai, Orlando Health, Essentia Health, Presbyterian Healthcare Services and Children’s Medical Center of Dallas all of which are already relying on HCD’s solution to provide actionable knowledge to improve quality while cutting costs.
Health Care DataWorks will provide a fully hosted business intelligence solution to speed the implementation process and enhance OhioHealth’s ability to leverage end-to-end user analysis for more informed healthcare decision making.

Columbus, OH (October 11, 2012) – Health Care DataWorks, Inc. (HCD) is entering into a multi-year agreement with OhioHealth to provide its KnowledgeEdge™ Enterprise Data Warehouse to broaden the health system’s access to analytics in a manner that will  improve quality while reducing costs.

Organization-wide data will be aggregated in the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) to give OhioHealth seamless and near real-time access to information across multiple operational systems, including financial, administrative, clinical and research. This end-to-end user analysis capability provides an increased level of business intelligence. Additionally, HCD will provide its Value-based Purchasing application to help preserve or potentially secure additional Medicare reimbursements.

The EDW is particularly beneficial in the new paradigm of health care, where the pay-for-results approach is replacing the fee-for-service model. Because the EDW will provide end users with numerous ad hoc capabilities for procuring information, OhioHealth will be able to incorporate predictive analysis into decision making.

“Today’s evolving healthcare environment has placed a premium on system-wide analytics capabilities,” said Michael Krouse, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for OhioHealth. “Our team is looking forward to a strong partnership with HCD that will enable us to fast track the EDW implementation and achieve a higher level of  healthcare analytics that to this point has been largely prohibitive.”

KnowledgeEdge Enterprise will deliver an Enterprise Data Warehouse in a fraction of the time it would take OhioHealth to build its own, the result of HCD providing all the software, hardware and support, including the underlying data model, pre-built dashboards and pre-built reports. HCD also will host the EDW for OhioHealth.

“Our relationship with OhioHealth is a testament to the value we bring to healthcare organizations seeking to leverage information for timely and informed decision making,” said Detlev H. (Herb) Smaltz, Health Care DataWorks CEO. “When you aggregate and organize the tremendous amount of data that is created from disparate data-producing systems, you achieve a higher level of business intelligence that puts you in a stronger position to manage the balance between improving quality and reducing costs.”
