IHE USA Publishes “Interoperability for Dummies” A Guide to Health IT

CHICAGO (June 12, 2013) – Across the world, various communities in Health Information Technology (IT) are developing methods for exchanging health information among healthcare providers, patients, and other authorized parties to revolutionize the delivery of care.  However, doing something as simple as sharing secure, private healthcare information is hard. Everything involved in sharing the information must be securely constructed in a way that all the other systems involved understand it. To advance this goal, IHE USA has published “Interoperability for Dummies; IHE Edition,” a complimentary eBook in the Wiley For Dummies format, which explains what Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) is, its value, and how people can use IHE to advance interoperability.

The eBook, written by Anita Samarth, in collaboration with IHE USA, provides an introduction to the integration and interoperability of health data, the origins of IHE, and an overview of IHE’s standards-based profiles which are used by communities for exchanging health information

Interoperability for Dummies – IHE Edition, will help readers to not only understand the value and critical nature of standards-based interoperable health IT systems and IHE’s role, but how to personally become part of the solution by implementing change in their organization.” says Joyce Sensmeier, RN-BC, MS, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, FAAN, president, IHE USA.

Readers of the eBook will learn how IHE improves patient care by providing a common standards-based framework for seamlessly exchanging health information among care providers at a local, regional, or national level. HIMSS Analytics Honors Legacy Health’s Hospitals and Ambulatory Clinics with Stage 7 Award

CHICAGO (June 10, 2013) – HIMSS Analytics recognizes six Legacy Health hospitals, and their ambulatory clinics, located in Portland, Ore. and Vancouver, Wash., with the HIMSS Stage 7 Award, and Stage 7 EMR Ambulatory Award.

The awards represent attainment of the highest level on the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM)SM, which is used to track EMR progress at hospitals and health systems. Developed in 2011, the EMR Ambulatory Adoption Model provides a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for ambulatory facilities owned by hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database.  These facilities include physician practices, clinics, outpatient centers and specialty clinics.

HIMSS Analytics Recognizes Three-State Group of Ambulatory Clinics with Stage 7 Award

CHICAGO (April 11, 2013) – Since 2005, HIMSS Analytics has tracked progress of electronic medical record implementation with its EMR Adoption Model? (EMRAM) for hospitals. Now, HIMSS Analytics announces that 54 Essentia Health ambulatory clinics, located in Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin, have reached Stage 7 on The Ambulatory EMR Adoption ModelSM (A-EMRAM).

Developed in 2011, the EMR Ambulatory Adoption Model provides a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for ambulatory facilities owned by hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database.  These facilities include physician practices, clinics, outpatient centers and specialty clinics. Tracking their progress in completing eight stages (0-7), ambulatory facilities can review the implementation and use of IT applications with the intent of reaching Stage 7, which represents an advanced electronic patient record environment.

Stage 7 ambulatory facilities:

  • Deliver patient care without the use of paper charts;
  • Use their EMR and patient portal to drive patient engagement, and thus, improved health status through better health maintenance;
  • Use their vast database of clinical information and evidence based practice guidance to improve  outcomes using business intelligence solutions; and
  • Are able to share patient information through private and public health information exchanges (HIE), which improves communications, speeds up appropriate care delivery, and ultimately, reduces unnecessary consumption.

“Having a common electronic medical record that spans our integrated delivery system is a key strategy for Essentia Health.  As we focus on changing models of care, quality initiatives and new payment models, our EMR has been instrumental in allowing Essentia to adapt quickly to these trends,” says Dennis Dassenko, Chief Information Officer, Essentia Health System.

“Rich ambulatory health IT tools and real-time analytics have provided operational and clinical leadership the opportunity to change care models as we become an Accountable Care Organization (ACO).  It also allows us to improve patient care by closing care gaps and improving quality metrics,” says Thomas H. Wiig, MD, FACS, Chief Medical Informatics Officer, Essentia Health.  “Patient involvement on care councils and at medical section meetings has provided valuable feedback about optimizing our secure patient portal and other patient care tools, and adds to our goal of increased patient engagement.”

“Essentia operates in a paperless environment using its fully deployed, multi-specialty EMR as the backbone for its comprehensive analytics program, which is tied to a patient engagement strategy resulting in improved health status in asthma care and congestive heart failure,” says John P. Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, Executive Vice President, HIMSS Analytics. “Serving a wide geographic area over several states, the Essentia clinics have adapted their program to fit a complex environment. With improved documentation, the claims denial rate has plummeted from the mid-teens to only 1 percent.”

As the current data on the A-EMRAM indicates, as of March 30, 2013, HIMSS Analytics has recognized only:

  • 1.10 percent of 19,234 ambulatory facilities at Stage 6; and
  • 0.9 percent of 19,234 ambulatory facilities at Stage 7.

HIMSS, AHIMA Release Results of HIE Staffing Environmental Scan

CHICAGO, (February 11, 2013) – Healthcare information exchange (HIE) organizations have become prime employers for both aspiring and experienced health information technology (IT) and healthcare information management (HIM) professionals, with the escalation of healthcare reform initiatives, such as HITECH and the Affordable Care Act. Noting this trend, plus the need for more formal research on necessary education, training, resources, talent and experience to effectively and efficiently staff HIE organizations, HIMSS and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) have released the findings of their 2012 HIE Staffing Model Environmental Scan.

HIMSS and AHIMA established a joint workgroup to explore both current and planned HIE staffing models with the goal of providing a clear understanding of the professional skill sets and experience critical to HIE organizational success.  Representatives from 35 HIE organizations, encompassing a wide range of sizes, locations, funding strategies and stages of implementation, responded to a detailed survey on their operational strategies, current staffing profiles and anticipated hiring needs.

 “The laudable goal of HIEs – to connect healthcare providers electronically to facilitate higher quality care – can only be realized if we ensure the right resources and staff are developed,” said AHIMA CEO Lynne Thomas Gordon, MBA, RHIA, CAE, FACHE, FAHIMA. “This study outlines recommendations for moving this industry forward.”

Trends in Health Information Exchange Organizational Staffing: AHIMA/HIMSS HIE Staffing Model Environmental Scan presents the results of this effort, including:

  • Detailed information on current and planned staffing for HIE organizations of all sizes, including the use of full-time, part-time, job-sharing, outsourcing and on-site contractor positions;
  • Trends in staffing needs across the life span of an HIE organization;
  • Use of federal programs, such as the HITECH Workforce Development Consortiums;
  • Common staffing challenges encountered by HIE organizations;
  • Recommendations for both HIE organizations and health IT professionals; and
  • Suggestions for future research.

IHE North American Connectathon and Conference 2013 Introduces New Features to Advance Health Information Exchange

CHICAGO – (February 6, 2013) – A significant new step was taken toward the interoperability of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) with the introduction of a pilot Certification Program at the IHE North American (NA) Connectathon and Conference, which concluded last week. The Connectathon testing event drew over 500 of the industry’s top engineers, while the one- day educational conference attracted well over 125 participants.

A new IHE USA Pilot Certification program was introduced during the IHE NA Connectathon 2013, which concluded last week. Also featured was testing for eight IHE International Domains and Health Level 7’s Consolidated CDA.

“The overwhelming majority of attendees at the IHE NA Connectathon Conference 2013 were first time attendees. This demonstrates the importance of interoperability and the essential role of IHE in enabling the meaningful use of health information technology. Connecting key stakeholders with the tools and resources they need to achieve interoperable systems is essential for enabling quality care,” noted Joyce Sensmeier, RN-BC, MS, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, FAAN, President, IHE USA.

IHE USA partnered with ICSA Labs to launch a new IHE Certification Program for health IT systems.. Using an accredited, standards-based certification program, IHE USA will be able to certify that systems are, in fact, interoperable against established criteria.

“The IHE USA Certification Pilot Program, implemented in partnership with ICSA Labs, was a resounding success. A dozen vendors participated in this inaugural effort that complements existing testing of IHE integration profiles at the Connectathon. This accredited, standards-based Certification program will greatly enhance the value of IHE Integration profiles in products that are available in the marketplace.” says Ms. Sensmeier. “We look forward to leveraging feedback from the pilot to augment future efforts that demonstrate IHE’s role in advancing interoperable standards-based systems,” she added.

Eight of the participants at the Connectathon were registered for certification testing on over 70 profiles. Results are being evaluated by the ICSA Labs Certification Body, which will grant certification based on requirements set forth by IHE USA, and the general principles covered by ISO/IEC Guide 65 for organizations providing product certification. Certification also will include industry-standard system surveillance activities that ensure that certified products continue to perform as tested, over time.

Certified products will be published by IHE USA, as well as in the official ICSA Labs product directory. Three tiers of Certification will be awarded:
• Tier 1: Conformance to IHE profiles
• Tier 2: Demonstrated interoperability amongst disparate systems
• Tier 3: Validated Implementations of deployed certified technology

“The Certification Program will benefit the purchasers and end users of the products that have proven IHE capabilities,” noted Amit Trivedi, Program Manager, ICSA Labs.

This year, in addition to the Certification Program, another new feature was added to the IHE NA Connectathon: testing of HL7’s Consolidated CDA standard.

The HL7 Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) is a document markup standard that specifies the structure and semantics of “clinical documents” for the purpose of exchange. For testing at the Connectathon, the HL7 Consolidated CDA (C-CDA) offered a combined library of CDA templates and common document types, from progress notes to discharge summaries and more. C- CDA is now stipulated in Standards and Certification Criteria of Meaningful Use Stage 2.

“Over two dozen vendors signed up to test 27 systems for C-CDA – including a diverse group of EMR, document imaging and HIE vendors.  After knocking on the virtual doors of EMR and HIE vendors for years encouraging acceptance of CDA document types, I have to say that the Health Story members are thrilled about the potential uptake of C-CDA and its role in contributing to comprehensive electronic patient stories,” said Joy Kuhl, Executive Director of the Health Story Project.

Over 500 of the industry’s top engineers attended the largest interoperability testing event in the U.S. The Connectathon, which is the health IT industry’s only large-scale face-to-face testing event had over 100 vendors and 160 test systems, demonstrating powerful advancements in health IT. Approximately 70,000 sq. feet of the Hyatt Regency basement was occupied for the testing. There were attendees from 11 countries—including Austria, Brazil, China, France, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, and Syria.

Introduced in 1999, the IHE Connectathon has been an annual event with continued growth in the level and scope of participation. A parallel event in Europe was established in 2001 and has followed a similar trajectory.

IHE Connectathons are professionally managed and independently monitored testing events. A technical project management team develops detailed test plans for each role being tested at the Connectathon and organizes the process to maximize interoperability testing between corresponding systems from different vendors. Independent monitors observe and record test results, which are published in the Connectathon results database.

IHE North American Connectathon and Conference 2013 Brings New Features to the Testing Floor

CHICAGO – (January 24, 2013) – The IHE North American (NA) Connectathon and Conference has been deemed the “Lollapalooza of the Health IT” world. Each year, 500 of the industry’s top engineers gather in Chicago for the largest interoperability testing event in the U.S. The Connectathon, which is the health IT industry’s only large-scale face-to-face testing event, will take place Jan. 28-Feb. 2, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago at 151 E. Wacker Drive.

The interoperability testing event boasts 100 vendors and 160 test systems, demonstrating powerful advancements in health IT. Vendor testing registration is closed, but attendees can still register for the IHE NA Connectathon Conference 2013 and obtain a sneak peak of the testing floor on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

The IHE NA Connectathon Conference, a one day educational event, on Jan.30, provides industry professionals with continuing education and networking opportunities. This year, three new features have been added to the lineup, including testing of HL7’s Consolidated CDA, IHE USA’s new Pilot Certification program in partnership with ICSA Labs, plus the first mHealth Hack-A-Thon.

IHE is organized by clinical and operational domains with eight IHE International Domainsavailable for testing at the event. In each domain, users with clinical and operational experience identify integration and information sharing priorities and vendors of relevant information systems develop consensus, standards-based solutions to address them.

Introduced in 1999, the IHE Connectathon has continued as an annual event with continued growth in the level and scope of participation. A parallel event in Europe was established in 2001 and has followed a similar trajectory. The next IHE Europe Connectathon will be held April 15-19, in Istanbul, Turkey. Connectathons have also been held in Australia, China, Japan and Korea.

IHE Connectathons are professionally managed and independently monitored testing events. A technical project management team develops detailed test plans for each role being tested at the Connectathon and organizes the process to maximize interoperability testing between corresponding systems from different vendors. Independent monitors observe and record test results, which are published in the Connectathon results database.

“IHE USA and ICSA Labs share the goal of accelerating the adoption of usable, secure, and interoperable health information technology to further the goal of improving patient safety and delivering higher quality of care. To that end, these organizations have formed a collaborative partnership to advance the state of the industry through the IHE USA Certification Pilot Program,” says Joyce Sensmeier, RN-BC, MS, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, FAAN, Vice President, Informatics, HIMSS. “This new program will be held in conjunction with the Connectathon, whose primary purpose is to address specific health IT interoperability issues. By testing the interoperability of their health IT systems, participants are able to improve the acquisition, management and communication of vital health information, while supporting efficient provider workflows and protecting private health information.”

HIMSS Appoints New Vice President for Government Relations

Arlington, VA (January 23, 2013)- HIMSS has announced the promotion of Thomas M. Leary, MALA, CAE, FHIMSS to the position of Vice President, Government Relations, where he will lead HIMSS’ public policy initiatives and outreach to Congress and Federal agencies.  The appointment is effective immediately.

“Health IT has an important role in healthcare transformation,” said Leary, “I am thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to engage HIMSS and our members with Congress, federal agency leaders, and our healthcare community partners on the critical health IT policy issues facing our nation.”

Leary had served as HIMSS’ Senior Director of Federal Affairs since 2003, directing HIMSS’ public policy activities with federal agencies, including analysis and response to federal regulatory requirements and leveraging HIMSS member subject matter expertise in health IT public policy development.

“We conducted a thorough search, and interviewed a number of impressive candidates.  Ultimately, it was clear that Tom was the best person for the job, and I’m delighted that he’s accepted,” said Carla Smith, Executive Vice President of HIMSS.   “His longtime dedication to healthcare transformation, and his deep understanding of the important issues and players in Washington, DC will further HIMSS’s cause of improving the quality, safety, cost-effectiveness and access to care through the best use of IT.”

Leary has spent most of his career focused on federal healthcare policy and regulation development. His experience prior to joining HIMSS includes a position as Division Manager for Science Applications International Corporation’s TRICARE Division, where he was engaged in the coordination of healthcare administrative outsourcing solutions for the Military Health System.  He also held several roles at the Department of Defense, including as the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs) and as the Special Assistant for Health Care Policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (Legislative Affairs).  Leary began his career in Washington working on Capitol Hill for Representative Les Aspin.

Tom Leary holds a Master of Arts degree in Legislative Affairs from the George Washington University and a Bachelor of Arts in History/Political Science from Rutgers College, The State University of New Jersey. He was awarded the HIMSS Award of Excellence for FY11 and received an award for exemplary civilian service from the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Leary replaces Dave Roberts, who was elected to the San Diego Board of Supervisors and began his term early this month.

HIMSS and SHS Recognize Dean Athanassiades for Accomplishments in Process Improvement & IT

CHICAGO (January 16, 2013) –Dean Athanassiades, PMP, CPHIMS, CHS, FHIMSS, DSHS, senior director, software customer services, with Phillips Healthcare in Atlanta, Ga., is the recipient of the 2012 SHS/HIMSS Excellence in Healthcare Management/Process Improvement Award, The joint award honors individuals who have best demonstrated leadership in implementing significant synergies between the process improvement and information technology professions.

Recipients of this award are selected jointly by the Boards of Directors of the Society for Health Systems and HIMSS. This award recognizes individuals who have made contributions of a professional or technical nature, which may include research or development of improved processes (with or without technology), or exemplary contribution to the professional society.

Athanassiades, an active member of both HIMSS and SHS, has 30 years of increasing responsibility in information technology consulting, operations, and sales, with a focus on improving processes through the application of technology.

As a member of HIMSS, Athanassiades received a Distinguished Fellow Award in 2008 and a HIMSS Leadership Award in 2005. He served as Chair of the HIMSS Fellows Council, Membership Services Committee and, Nominating Committee and was a member of the HIMSS Georgia chapter board of directors. Currently, he is a HIMSS Management Engineering Process Community (MEPI) committee member and chair of the Electronic Medical Record Change Management Task Force.

His activity with SHS includes SHS Diplomate, chair of the SHS Annual Conferences in 2009 and 2010, and Chair Emeritus SHS 2011 – 2013 Annual Conferences. He is also a senior member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE).

HIMSS and ACCE Recognize Paul H. Frisch for Excellence in Clinical Engineering and IT

CHICAGO (January 15, 2013) – Paul H. Frisch, PhD, FHIMSS, received the 2012 ACCE-HIMSS Excellence in Clinical Engineering and Information Technology Synergies Award, a joint award sponsored by ACCE and HIMSS. The Boards of Directors of both organizations selected the recipient.

The award recognizes individuals who have best demonstrated leadership in promoting or implementing significant synergies between the clinical engineering and information technology professions.  Award recipients also must be members in good standing of both organizations.  Nominees for the award are honored for professional or technical contributions to the professions, such as research, development of a new process or product, a paper of significance, and “trailblazing’ work in a new application of clinical engineering and IT.

Dr. Frisch has over 30 years of professional experience and contributions to the field; and is a long-standing of member of HIMSS & ACCE. He has educated clinical staff, administration and hospital thought leaders about diverse technologies and the synergies required to develop, deploy and manage complex systems in the healthcare setting.

As a faculty member and Chief of Biomedical Engineering in the Department of Medical Physics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and a visiting professor at Binghamton University, Dr. Frisch is also a researcher. One of his research interests has been the transition of clinical devices from stand-alone to networked systems sharing and distributing information between clinical applications and devices. He has extensively researched how these devices have also moved to expand their functionality to use wireless technologies (WiFi, etc.) as medium for conveying this critical information. As these clinical devices and systems transition between the boundaries of engineering and information technology, it becomes critical for the industry to develop a strong synergy between information technologies and biomedical / clinical engineering.

To further demonstrate this complex interaction, Frisch designed the Intelligent Hospital™ Pavilion, an interactive exhibit first introduced at HIMSS11.This addition to the exhibit floor has helpedraise awareness of, and educated the healthcare industry on, the many applications of RFID and RTLS technologies integrated within clinical scenarios, including the required synergy between information technologies and biomedical/clinical engineering.

HIMSS Analytics Honors Florida Hospital North Pinellas with Stage 7 Award

CHICAGO (January 3, 2013) – HIMSS Analytics recognizes Florida Hospital North Pinellas, an Adventist Health System facility in Tarpon Spring, Fla., with its Stage 7 Award. The award represents attainment of the highest level on the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM)?, which is used to track EMR progress at hospitals and health systems.

HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database. There are eight stages (0-7) that measure a hospital’s implementation and use of information technology applications. The final stage, Stage 7, represents an advanced patient record environment. The validation process to confirm a hospital has reached Stage 7 includes a site visit by an executive from HIMSS Analytics and former or current chief information officers to ensure an unbiased evaluation of the Stage 7 environments.
