Quintiles Announces Agreement to Acquire Encore Health Resources

Acquisition Will Bolster Quintiles’ Expertise in Health-Information Analytics Services and Create Foundation for Expanded Services Suite

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–As part of its continued efforts to strengthen and expand its service capabilities across the healthcare continuum, Quintiles today announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Encore Health Resources (Encore). Encore is a leader in the health-information analytics and technology services industry focused on healthcare providers. Through its consulting services and solutions, Encore assists customers with a wide range of strategy, advisory, implementation, process-redesign, optimization, analytics and performance-improvement initiatives.

Additionally, Encore can utilize the expertise of Quintiles’ 950 medical doctors, 900 Ph.D.’s, as well as its nurse educators and world-class biostatisticians to help hospitals and providers solve their most pressing population health challenges.

“Today is the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Encore,” said Dana Sellers, chief executive officer, Encore. “Encore was founded with a focus on driving value through data to improve performance and clinical outcomes. I believe that this focus and our vision for the future align well with Quintiles. We will be joining a global leader, and we look forward to working together to help deliver further advancements in healthcare.”

The transaction, which is subject to standard and customary closing conditions, is expected to close later this quarter. Upon completion of this transaction, Encore will join Quintiles’ Integrated Healthcare Services segment and be known as “Encore, A Quintiles Company.”

Encore Health Resources CoreANALYTICS Architecture Receives 2014 EHR Certification

HOUSTON – January 17, 2014Encore Health Resources announced today that its CoreANALYTICS® 1.0 architecture – a set of integrated analytical tools that help drive continuous health-system performance improvement – has been listed on the federal government’s Certified Health IT Product List website as compliant with the ONC 2014 Edition criteria as an EHR Module.  The CoreANALYTICS EHR certification formally occurred on November 27, 2013 by the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT®), an ONC-ACB, in accordance with the certification criteria adopted by the secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS).  The ONC 2014 Edition criteria support both Stages 1 and 2 meaningful use measures required to qualify eligible providers and hospitals for funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

CoreANALYTICS is a set of integrated analytical tools that, coupled with Encore services, helps to drive continuous health-system performance improvement through the application of “smart, skinny data,” or an Encore approach that focuses on capturing just the data required to solve specific problems.

“We believe this certification confirms that Encore’s CoreANALYTICS software tools are poised to assist health systems meet and exceed thresholds for the quality and performance measures required to qualify for U.S. Government EHR Meaningful-Use incentive payments and avoid associated penalties – as well as manage emerging, at-risk government and commercial payment models” said Sherie Giles, Partner for Research and Development, Encore Health Resources. “CoreANALYTICS comprises a uniquely comprehensive solution that transforms data generated by EHRs as well as financial and operational systems, into actionable intelligence for proactive management of patient populations, quality, and costs.  This helps providers navigate through and beyond challenges posed by the healthcare industry’s rapid shift from fee-for-service to fee-for value care-delivery and reimbursement models.”

The ONC HIT Certification Program certifies that EHR Modules meet one or more – but not all – of the 2014 Edition criteria approved by the Secretary of Health & Human Services (HHS) for either eligible provider or hospital technology.

“CCHIT congratulates companies successfully achieving EHR technology certification,” said Alisa Ray, executive director, CCHIT.  “These companies are now able to make their products available to providers wishing to adopt health IT to demonstrate meaningful use and earn federal incentives.”

CoreANALYTICS 1.0’s certification number is CC-2014-100098-1.  ONC HIT certification conferred by CCHIT does not represent an endorsement of the certified EHR technology by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

CoreANALYTICS 1.0’s modular certification qualifies the technology as capable of supporting achievement of meaningful use for the Medicare and Medicaid EHR incentive programs. The technology is also differentiated by its analytics engine – included in the certification — which enriches information through proven data derivation and measure calculations, successfully demonstrated compliance criteria for Clinical Quality Measures (CQM) and Utilization Measures (Core/Menu Set).

CoreANALYTICS 1.0 met the following certification criteria and clinical quality measures: § 170.314(c)(1), capture and export; 170.314(c)(2), incorporate and calculate; § 170.314(c)(3), electronic submission; § 170.314(g)(2), automated measure calculation; and § 170.314(g)(4) quality management system.  It also met the following clinical quality measures:  CMS55v2, CMS71v3, CMS72v2, CMS73v2, CMS91v3, CMS102v2, CMS104v2, CMS105v2, CMS107v2, CMS108v2, CMS109v2, CMS110v2, CMS111v2, CMS114v2 and CMS190v2.

Additional costs incurred may include:  Software License Agreement; Implementation fees per source system, including install, training, and source system connectivity; any client costs necessary to bring hardware to recommended configuration.

HealthcareScene.com Announces Acquisition of Leading Healthcare IT Job Board and Blog

LAS VEGAS, November 13, 2013 – HealthcareScene.com announced today that it has acquired HealthcareITCentral.com, a well-known and respected healthcare IT industry job board, and HealthcareITToday.com, an established blog focused on healthcare IT workforce and career development. The two websites will join the HealthcareScene.com network of 15 blogs, adding significant career-focused tools and resources for HealthcareScene.com’s sizable and rapidly growing audience of healthcare IT professionals.

John Lynn, founder of HealthcareScene.com, explains the factors that led to his acquisition decision:  “Workforce development is such a key part of the success of any EHR project.  When we saw what had been created by HealthcareITCentral.com, we knew we had to find a way to bring the two companies together.  Plus, we were happy to find in HealthcareITCentral.com and HealthcareITToday.com an industry leader with an impeccable reputation who approached business with the same ethics and vision that we do.

HealthcareITCentral.com has long been the preferred job board for top companies such as Beacon Partners, First Choice Professionals, Cipe Consulting Group, CTG Healthcare, Holland Square Group, Healthcare IS, and many others.  Additionally, top universities such as the University of Illinois at Chicago and Duke University have relied on its reach and reputation to help spread the word about their Informatics programs.  With this solid foundation, it’s a great platform, with limitless potential for future expansion.  In fact, since the acquisition closed, top Health IT consulting companies ESD, Encore Health Resources, and Cordea Consulting have started working with HealthcareITCentral.com as well.  I’m excited about providing our readership with the considerable tools offered by this acquisition.”

The goal of HealthcareITCentral.com founder Gwen Darling was to build a career portal that provided an unparalleled user experience for both healthcare IT candidates and employers.  “For the last 4 1/2 years, we’ve worked to build resources that made it easy for candidates and employers to connect, keeping in mind all along that the most important component of workforce development is the ability to make quality, relevant relationships on both sides of the hiring equation.

I always knew that the next step would be to find a larger healthcare IT network that had the ability to cast a much wider but still highly targeted net.  However, I’m protective of our excellent reputation and user experience, and so I waited to find an organization with a similar vision and focus before considering an acquisition.   HealthcareScene.com more than delivers on all counts, as both John Lynn and his network come with the highest recommendation.  I’m confident that our clients and candidates will be very happy with what comes next.”

Healthcare Technology Leader Ivo Nelson Launches Next Wave Health

New venture provides start-up capital, advice and operational support to healthcare entrepreneurs

[Houston, Texas – June 10, 2013] Healthcare pioneer and investor Ivo Nelson announced today the launch of his latest venture, Next Wave Health. Next Wave Health will help start-up healthcare information technology companies succeed with management advice, operational support and capital.

“Big ideas are at the heart of any successful healthcare technology company. But smart visionaries need more than big ideas. They need capital and they need advisors who understand their industry and their business,” said Nelson. “Next Wave Health will bring some of the brightest minds in healthcare together to work with start-up and early stage companies on their vision and managing their growth.”

“The healthcare industry is in the perfect storm right now. The levels of change are unprecedented,” said Nelson. “Risk is shifting, fee-for-service reimbursement models are being replaced with wellness and new discoveries are ahead with big data solutions.   Nimble and innovative new companies are pouring into the healthcare market to address these opportunities. Next Wave Health exists to help these entrepreneurs navigate the healthcare industry and succeed step by step as they grow.”

For 30 years, Nelson has been a leader and an innovator in the healthcare industry. He introduced large-scale outsourcing to the provider segment of healthcare, and pioneered new approaches for improving clinical process through technology.

In 1988, he helped start the healthcare division of Perot Systems, an outsourcing company founded by Ross Perot. In 1992, he helped start the Houston-based Insource Management Group (IMG), later renamed Healthlink. As CEO, Nelson grew Healthlink to be the largest privately held, provider-focused healthcare technology consulting firm in the industry when IBM acquired it in 2005. Following IBM’s acquisition of Healthlink in June 2005, Nelson served as the leader of IBM’s Global Healthcare Provider business.

In 2009, he co-founded Encore Health Resources with Dana Sellers to assist healthcare organizations in mining the business intelligence accrued after decades of process and technology improvements. Encore is one of the fastest-growing consultancies in the industry and has been named one of Modern Healthcare’s “Best Places to Work in Healthcare” three years in a row.

Nelson is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Leadership Award, and was named to the HIMSS “50 in 50″ list, recognizing the top 50 contributors to the healthcare IT industry in the past 50 years. He also won the E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year Award (2005), one of the most prestigious business award offered.

Next Wave Health currently serves as a strategic advisor or investor for several healthcare technology companies including Health Care DataWorks, a leading provider of business intelligence solutions; MedSynergies, which helps physicians increase market share and improve patient care; HealthPost, which delivers cloud-based healthcare booking solutions and SCI Solutions, which delivers software that enables hospitals to better manage their physician alignment strategies and reduce operating costs. Nelson also continues to serve on the board of Encore Health Resources.

“This is an incredible moment to work in the healthcare industry,” said Nelson. “I am very excited to bring together great new ideas and seasoned leaders. I look forward to applauding the results of their work.”

ENCORE HEALTH RESOURCES LAUNCHES NEW HEALTH ANALYTICS PRACTICE

“Smart Skinny” approach helps clients improve data quality, increase data value

HOUSTON – MAY 16, 2013 – Encore Health Resources, an award-winning health-information technology (HIT) services company, announced today the launch of its Health Analytics consulting practice focused on “smart enterprise data.” An adjunct to the launch of Encore’s Value-based Performance Improvement™ (VPI) suite of services and solutions at HIMSS in February, the Health Analytics practice helps organizations define their analytics roadmap – including the design and implementation of maturing health data governance structure and process. The new practice will be led by Encore’s newest Service Line Executive, Randy L. Thomas, FHIMSS. Ms. Thomas brings more than 25 years of experience in HIT with a focus on analytics, surveillance, and the re-use of data to support the quality, safety, and efficiency of performance-improvement efforts currently underway across the U.S. healthcare industry.

The new practice addresses the needs of healthcare organizations awash in a sea of disconnected data and struggling to understand the relationships between quality, safety, productivity, and cost. The shifting landscape of care delivery and reimbursement models – from fee-for-service to fee-for value — increasingly demands the leveraging of enterprise data as an essential part of continuous performance improvement. Encore’s full suite of health analytics services will help health systems understand the balance of people, processes, and technology needed to support their information needs in today’s rapidly changing and challenging environment.
As value-based models evolve, Encore’s range of innovative smart, skinny solutions will help clients capture metrics that extend beyond care outcomes to measures of overall population health and wellness. Encore’s Health Analytics practice will help organizations plot an achievable course to demonstrate that they are delivering high-quality clinical outcomes when treating patients and keeping people well.

In contrast to the widespread industry focus on “Big Data,” Encore’s “Smart Skinny Data” strategy is founded on the capture of precise information from multiple systems and sources and focuses on what actually needs to be analyzed at any given time – evolving along the continuum of reform. Beginning with the end in mind, Encore’s Health Analytics practice consultants work with clients to prioritize their measurement and analytics needs – aligned with overall enterprise objectives.

The new practice will offer a full array of health analytics services, from strategy and roadmaps to warehouse selection and from implementation to performance improvement. A key element of Encore’s Health Analytics practice is data governance: too many organizations are learning that capturing massive amounts of data in a warehouse without proper data governance creates a lack of lineage and trust – therefore making it impossible to act on the insights that the data provides.

“To survive and thrive in this changing healthcare landscape, our clients will need to define a plan now to harness the untapped value in data across their enterprise – to build the skills, processes, and enabling technologies that turns data into information that can be used to drive new levels of performance,” said Ms. Thomas. “At Encore, we know that this will require our very special breed of consultants: staff that can bridge the gap between clinical and technical teams. These ‘bridge’consultants have their feet in both worlds and the communication skills required to translate clinical needs to technologists and technical realities back to clinicians.”

Ms. Thomas has previously served in leadership roles in strategic consulting, product management, and product marketing. She brings Encore and its clients a seasoned perspective on how to drive measurable results through the use of business intelligence in healthcare. In her new role, Ms. Thomas will lead the Health Analytics practice charged with helping clients define and implement a health analytics roadmap. Previously, Ms. Thomas was vice president of portfolio strategy and design at Premier Inc., where she led the redesign of the analytics and surveillance portfolio and the social business platform. Prior to joining Premier, Ms. Thomas was an associate partner in the healthcare provider practice of Global Services for IBM. There, she created and led the health analytics strategy practice and was a fellow in the IBM Center for Healthcare Management. She joined IBM in 2005 on the acquisition of Healthlink, where she successively led the thought leadership, strategic services, and Eclipsys service areas.

Ms. Thomas has authored a white paper to help clients understand the “smart skinny” approach behind the new Health Analytics practice she leads. It is entitled, Enterprise Data in Healthcare: An Untapped Asset for Performance Improvement Analysis and Measurement, and it is now available on the Thought Leadership page of Encore’s Internet site.

“We will leverage Randy’s extensive experience in healthcare and business intelligence to lead our Health Analytics practice – part of our Value-based Performance Improvement lifecycle of services. We’re particularly excited about the success of our innovative ‘smart, skinny data’ CoreANALYTICS tools in our continuous quest for innovation,” said Dana Sellers, CEO, Encore Health Resources. “Our goal is to help our clients focus on capturing the right data accurately and leveraging that data into actionable intelligence — all while reducing cost as well as the time required to make measurable improvement in clinical outcomes and performance.”

ENCORE HEALTH RESOURCES LAUNCHES VALUE-BASED PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT™ SOLUTIONS SUITE POWERED BY CoreANALYTICS™

New lifecycle of services and software tools developed in partnership with CHI

HOUSTON – February 26, 2013 – Encore Health Resources, an award-winning health-information technology (HIT) services company, announced today the launch of its new Value-based Performance Improvement™ (VPI) suite of services and software. VPI features CoreANALYTICS™, a set of integrated analytical tools that helps drive continuous health-system performance improvement. In an industry moving rapidly from volume- to value-based reimbursement, VPI and CoreANALYTICS comprise a uniquely comprehensive solution that transforms data generated by electronic health record (EHR), financial, and operational systems into actionable intelligence for proactive management of patient populations, quality, and costs.

Encore’s Value-based Performance Improvement with CoreANALYTICS is poised to assist health systems meet and exceed thresholds for the quality and performance measures required to qualify for U.S. Government EHR Meaningful-Use incentive payments and avoid associated penalties—as well as manage emerging, at-risk government and commercial payment models.  This new solution suite converts relevant data into intelligent, practical ways to help key stakeholders – including hospitals, physicians, and their patients – successfully navigate through and beyond challenges posed by the healthcare industry’s rapid shift from fee-for-service to fee-for-value.

Key VPI and CoreANALYTICS differentiators include a unique blend of Encore’s seasoned consultants with in-depth understanding of clinical data, proven methodologies and vendor-neutral analytical tools. These new tools help healthcare organizations focus on relevant quality and performance data while leveraging existing business-intelligence investments. This new, focused approach accelerates a client’s reimbursement transformation at a competitively low cost of entry through all stages of EHR Meaningful Use and also prepares them for evolving reimbursement models. VPI supports Value-Based Purchasing, Patient Centered Medical Homes, Clinical Integration Networking, and Accountable Care Organizations.

Another key differentiator is that CoreANALYTICS’ architecture allows for full or modular deployment.  A full deployment includes the Data Acquisition Engine (extract, translate, and load); the Integrated Information Platform, including our Analytics Engine (creates a “smart, skinny” data warehouse); and the Quality and Performance Modules (building dynamic dashboards), which together provide a comprehensive data-to-information transformation solution.   At the heart of the suite is Encore’s exclusive Analytics Engine, which enriches information through proven data derivation and measure calculations. These modular components can also be layered with an organization’s established data warehouse or reporting capability for a comprehensive, cost-effective solution.

Encore built its new solutions suite with development partner Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI).  Today, CHI is successfully testing VPI and CoreANALYTICS to optimize its OneCare Program, a $2 billion, enterprise-wide initiative to advance patient care through the power of information. Using VPI and CoreANALYTICS, CHI’s goals are to leverage OneCare to create a powerful, information-based system that will drive significant improvements in patient care throughout its 70 hospitals across the U.S.

“Our partnership with Encore has significantly extended the power of OneCare to provide ‘in-time’ information that will help CHI understand how we are performing against our goals,” said Evon Holladay, MGA, Vice President, Enterprise Intelligence, Catholic Health Initiatives.

As the centerpiece of the VPI lifecycle of performance improvement services, CoreANALYTICS is focused on measures targeted at specific quality and performance data from source systems. It dynamically updates measures calculations to meet the demands of a rapidly transforming industry. Encore’s CoreGPS® Data Tool informs the Analytics Engine and eliminates the need for custom coding for new measures and calculations, thereby creating a lower-cost analytics solution.

The CoreANALYTICS Quality and Reporting Modules provide integrated views of actionable information and insight into quality and performance across patient populations.  These modules include:

  • Meaningful Use Compliance and Reporting Module: Focused on analysis and reporting for successful participation in the CMS EHR Incentive Program and subsequent stages.
  • At-Risk Population Module:  Analysis and reporting focused on high-cost, at-risk populations including analysis for care processes and utilization and performance against specific measures.
  • Clinical Analytics for Care Coordination Module: Provides physicians “in time” information using dashboards and reports to manage patients with preventive guidelines stratified by disease state.
  • Financial Analytics: Analyzes cost savings achieved through clinical integration efforts and new care processes calculated within specific treatment patterns, clinical focus areas, populations, or globally.

“Encore’s partnership with CHI created a demanding laboratory that presented real-world challenges in dozens of hospitals with multiple EHR systems and a unified goal for improved care delivery in an unprecedented environment of change,” said Dana Sellers, CEO, Encore Health Resources. “The result is our Value-based Performance Improvement lifecycle of services, featuring the CoreANALYTICS road-tested software tools, which are now ready to help clients across our industry gain new insights that drive increasing value throughout their organizations and a future of intelligent health performance.”

The Encore partnership with CSHS is focused on enabling the health system to achieve complete success in its CPOE implementation, putting the necessary tools in place to maintain such success for years to come.  A specific objective of the project is that Encore help Cedars-Sinai to attract and retain an internal team trained in skills and know-how that will reduce the use of consultants over time.  Encore and Cedars refer to this part of the partnership as “sustainability” – a term describing the delivery of high service levels to Cedars’ stakeholders that are independent of third-party support after project completion.

“At Cedars-Sinai, we’ll ensure that process redesign is incorporated with application capabilities that support user adoption,” said Dana Sellers, President and CEO, Encore Health Resources. “In bringing solutions to Cedars-Sinai, we’re committed to helping them achieve their immediate goals while preparing for a continued future of excellence.  To that end, our success will not only be measured along the way, but ultimately proven by Cedars-Sinai continued success with CPOE in the years to come.”

ENCORE HEALTH RESOURCES HELPS DOCTORS HOSPITAL AT RENAISSANCE EARN HIGH-LEVEL HIMSS EMR ADOPTION RANKING IN RECORD TIME

HOUSTON and McALLEN, TX — February 18, 2011: Dedication, teamwork, and commitment between Encore Health Resources and Doctors Hospital at Renaissance (DHR) to implement a first-rate, cross-enterprise electronic medical record (EMR) system at the award-winning, Rio Grande Valley health system has earned DHR a high ranking on the Health Information Management & Systems Society (HIMSS) U.S. EMR Adoption Model.  From its beginning through “go-live” across DHR’s care facilities, the EMR implementation required less than 14 months to successfully accomplish.

Encore Health Resources is a leader in advanced information-technology services for the global healthcare industry.  DHR is the largest physician-owned hospital in the United States and is consistently ranked as one of the nation’s top medical centers for delivering excellence in healthcare to one of the poorest regions in the country.

DHR engaged Encore to provide full program management at an accelerated implementation pace for all activities associated with the EMR implementation, relying on Encore’s deep understanding of leading software systems, best practices, and DHR’s complete implementation project life cycle.

Encore quickly responded with a structured, team-based approach to design and design review, coding and testing, project management, user training, and system rollout.  In addition, Encore provided integration leadership, training and testing coordination, and build support for such critical systems as computerized provider order entry (CPOE), clinical documentation (ClinDoc), and electronic medication administration records (eMARs), among many more.

Within 14 months – on time and on budget — Encore delivered all systems, professional support, and training to meet project requirements and qualify DHR for one of HIMSS’ top achievement levels for EMR Adoption.  On a scale of zero through 7, Encore’s teamwork with DHR moved the health system from an initial ranking of 0.5 to a January 2011 level of 6, which is presently held by only 3.2 percent of all hospitals in the United States.  Level 6 requires that full physician documentation and charting be operational for at least one patient-care service and that a full complement of radiology PACs (picture, archiving, and communication systems) is implemented and available to physicians via an Intranet or other secure network.

“Throughout our work together, DHR recognized Encore’s focus on pairing with DHR counterparts to ensure that leadership was provided at all levels.  We also appreciated the training they delivered for go-live and post-live maintenance, the governance structure they built to review and approve cross-disciplinary decisions, and the education they provided to ensure the complete involvement and integration of our physicians into the new EMR process,” said Les Clonch, CIO, DHR.  “This superb teamwork effectively and efficiently helped DHR establish an EMR system that will strongly support our mission to provide quality, compassionate, and cost-effective patient care while rendering the most advanced professional services to our patients.”

The rapid and successful implementation of its EMR system will not only advance DHR’s vision for excellence in the delivery of community healthcare, but it will also position the health system to meet U.S. Federal Government requirements for the “meaningful use” of EMRs as defined under the terms of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 (commonly known as the “Stimulus Plan”) and its Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act provision.

To support DHR’s new system, Encore will also leverage its EHRight™ approach and knowledgebase.  EHRight is focused on deploying leading EHR systems in ways that help organizations to capture and reuse data, analyze costs and revenue, and report quality.

“Fourteen months ago — and in an historic environment of national healthcare reform — we began a strategic journey with DHR that will bring a health system renowned for innovation and excellence the ongoing benefits that come with an HIT-driven, information-based care delivery system,” said Dana Sellers, President and CEO, Encore Health Resources. “We are pleased that DHR trusted us all along the way.  Working as one, even a short timeline was long enough to produce results that have earned superior rankings from one of the world’s premier healthcare industry associations.”
