Dr. Jeremy Bradley Family Practice Clinic Selected as 2012 Ambulatory HIMSS Davies Award Winner

CHICAGO (November 26, 2012) – HIMSS honors Dr. Jeremy Bradley Family Practice  located in Owensboro, Ky., as a winner of the 2012 Ambulatory HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence. Since 1994, the Nicholas E. Davies Award recognizes excellence in health information technology, specifically excellence in use of the EHR to successfully improve quality of care and patient safety while achieving a demonstrated return on investment.

The Ambulatory HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence  recognizes the most exemplary implementations and utilizations of EHR in independent ambulatory practices, community health clinics/organizations, and enterprise clinics. The award requires that staff in the healthcare system applying for the award assess and document their progress and accomplishments against a framework for thinking about the process of implementing an EHR.

The 2012 Ambulatory HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence winner Dr. Jeremy Bradley opened his practice in 2000 to meet the clinical needs of Daviess County, a federally designated primary care physician shortage location. Dr. Bradley provides primary care to over 9,000 active patients, with 50% of patients covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or uninsured. The practice employs one physician, one nurse practitioner, and one physician assistant.

In 2008, Dr. Bradley implemented a fully integrated EHR into the practice. The introduction of EHR-enabled clinical quality measurement and reporting, and later Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) practice transformation, with all of its attendant changes in provider roles and office workflow, resulted in vastly improved delivery of clinical care and a return on initial investment of 200 percent.. Following the completion of the EHR implementation, Dr. Bradley was honored by the Bridges to Excellence program for improved quality outcomes associated with diabetes and hypertension, and the practice was the first ambulatory clinic in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to earn Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) status from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA.)

“Dr. Bradley has used EHR technology to improve patient outcomes over time and ensure evidence-based, high quality care,” says John Bender, MD, chair, Davies Ambulatory Committee, and Medical Director, Miramont Family Medicine, in Ft. Collins, Colo. “All of us on the Davies Ambulatory Committee congratulates Dr. Jeremy Bradley for his focus on improving the quality of healthcare delivery with the best use of health IT.”

Dr. Jeremy Bradley Family Practice will be recognized at the 2013 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans, La. on March 3-7, 2013.  For more information on applying for the HIMSS Davies Awards of Excellence, visit the HIMSS website.  Applications are accepted throughout the year.

Davies Award recognizes excellence in health information technology, specifically excellence in use of the EHR to successfully improve quality of care and patient safety.

The Ambulatory HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence  recognizes the most exemplary implementations and utilizations of EHR in independent ambulatory practices, community health clinics/organizations, and enterprise clinics. The award requires that staff in the healthcare system applying for the award to assess and document their progress and accomplishments against a framework for thinking about the process of implementing an EHR.

The 2012 Ambulatory HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence winner is a physician-owned, physician-governed medical organization founded in Providence, R.I., in 1995. Coastal employs 91 providers in 19 offices across the state, and provides predominantly primary care services to 105,000 adult and pediatric patients, who comprise 10 percent of the Rhode Island population.

EDCO Unveils Solarity® Software at 2012 AHIMA Convention

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – EDCO® Health Information Solutions, a national leader in the management of health information, announced the launch of Solarity® software at the American Health Information Management Association convention in Chicago, Ill. today.  Solarity, advanced document recognition software for scanning and indexing medical records, has been used by EDCO internally since 2008.  Now, the proven power of Solarity is available to hospitals and clinics throughout North America as web-based software.

The 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) propelled the healthcare industry into rapid change toward the implementation of electronic health records (EHR).   However, as the industry strives to create a complete electronic patient chart, paper is still a component of the patient record even after the implementation of a leading EHR system.

“As hospitals become more electronic, the paper that remains is more problematic and time consuming to capture electronically.  Finding the right tools to automate this process is critical to creating a complete electronic patient record,” said Rose Devadas, Vice President of Advanced Solutions at EDCO. “Solarity bridges the gap between the paper record and the fully electronic record required for exemplary patient care, the exchange of health information, and expedited downstream billing processes.”

The path to a completely electronic record has many steps and requires the optimization of the entire health record environment.  Solarity software and its defined processes enable the fast, accurate scanning and indexing of paper documents into the electronic chart using a proprietary content recognition engine, document review module, and flexible workflow.  This often overlooked step effects multiple additional processes such as coding and billing in the electronic environment.

Customers utilizing Solarity can easily index and integrate scanned images from the floors, clinics, and the health information management department into the healthcare facility’s existing electronic document management system without the use of bar codes for document recognition.

“Creating Solarity has enabled us to dramatically increase our internal indexing productivity.  We are excited to share this technology with the marketplace so that our customers will be able to realize the same gains in efficiency,” says Chez Tschetter, Chief Information Officer at EDCO.

More information about Solarity can be found online at www.solaritysoftware.com.

About EDCO Health Information Solutions

For more than 50 years, EDCO has assisted healthcare facilities in the digitization of medical records.  Today, EDCO provides software and services to hospitals and clinics throughout North America that enhance electronic health record initiatives.

HIMSS Analytics Recognizes Fort HealthCare with Stage 7 Award

CHICAGO (September 17, 2012) – HIMSS Analytics recognizes Fort HealthCare in Fort Atkinson, Wis.  with its Stage 7 Award. The Stage 7 award represents attainment of the highest level on the Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM), which is used to track EMR progress at hospitals and health systems.

“The HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 award is further evidence affirming the dedication of our medical staff and employees as they’ve worked tirelessly to improve the patient experience using technology available in our electronic medical records system,” said Jim Dahl, chief information officer at Fort HealthCare.  “I am proud that we have attained an elite level of automation here in Wisconsin that up to now has only been achieved at a much larger university medical institution. This level of accomplishment will be invaluable as we serve our local community with outstanding care.”

HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database. There are eight stages (0-7) that measure a hospital’s implementation and utilization of information technology applications. The final stage, Stage 7, represents an advanced patient record environment. The validation process to confirm a hospital has reached Stage 7 includes a site visit by an executive from HIMSS Analytics and former or current chief information officers to ensure an unbiased evaluation of the Stage 7 environments.

In 2010, Fort HealthCare began planning for an organization-wide implementation of a comprehensive electronic health record (EHR) system. The main goal was to create a medical record system that would provide critical medical data whenever and wherever it’s needed.  This access to relevant, integrated clinical information allows medical professionals, such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, therapists and lab technicians to communicate instantly with the rest of the patient’s care team and enables them to make the best care decisions possible.

More than 50 individual EMR components – a component being a radiology information system, a pharmacy system, a laboratory system, a nurse documentation system – were installed in a “big bang” implementation to provide physicians and other care givers access to the highest level of medical record technology. Enhancements related to chronic disease management, revenue cycle and employee benefits management were also implemented.

The new EHR software system, known internally to Fort HealthCare staff as the Compass project, became available throughout all Fort Memorial Hospital and Fort Medical Group clinic locations on August 1, 2011

Fort HealthCare will be recognized at the 2013 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans, La. on March 3-7, 2013. As of Quarter 2, 2012, Fort HealthCare is among the 95 U.S. facilities, or 1.7 percent, of the more than 5,000 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics® Database, to be awarded the HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Award.

“Fort HealthCare has an excellent analytics program that drives performance improvement in core measures and other clinical strategic initiatives,’ said John P. Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, Executive Vice President, HIMSS Analytics. “It is a totally paperless environment, and well positioned for bundled payment reform with a comprehensive e-record for inpatient as well as ambulatory.”

Visit the HIMSS Analytics Web site for more information on the Stage 7 award.

HIMSS Analytics Recognizes The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center with Stage 7 Award

The HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 award honors hospitals operating in a paperless environment and representing best practices in implementing EMR

CHICAGO (May 29, 2012) – HIMSS Analytics announced that The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, has received its Stage 7 Award for four hospitals. These include: The Ohio State University Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital; The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute; The Ohio State University Hospital; and The Ohio State University Hospital East.  The Stage 7 award represents attainment of the highest level on the Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM), which is used to track EMR progress at hospitals and health systems.

“We are very excited to receive the Stage 7 Award. We believe this designation is important beyond the award itself, because the criteria are structured to represent the advanced use of technology to improve patient care and working toward this award has helped us realize our mission of improving people’s lives,” says Phyllis Teater, MBA, Chief Information Officer and Associate Vice President, Health Services, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

The hospitals will be recognized at the 2013 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans, La. on March 3-7, 2013. As of Quarter 1, 2012, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is one of only 86 U.S. facilities, or 1.2 percent, of the more than 5,000 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics Database, to be awarded the HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Award.

“This award is a tribute to the hard work of every member of our team,” says Dr. Steven G. Gabbe, Chief Executive Officer of Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center. “Our electronic system will allow us to provide more efficient, effective and better coordinated care to our patients. Patient records are in a central, secure location where health providers can access to their patients’ current health information.

“Our electronic system also gives patients more ownership over their own medical care through the patient portal. They can review their health history, read over test results and see records from doctor’s appointments and inpatient hospital stays. This will help patients become the active participants in their own health.”

“The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is an extremely data-driven organization with outstanding clinical and business intelligence and a tightly scheduled, successful training process,” says John P. Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, Executive Vice President, HIMSS Analytics. “Ohio State has changed the culture and expectations of health IT through this process by moving from a best of breed, multi-vendor environment to a primary vendor-focused environment. With the elimination of 169 interfaces, the primary vendor focus enabled enterprise-wide, evidence-based standardization beyond anything previously possible.

Anoto Survey Finds Healthcare Industry Buried in Paperwork; Problem Predicted to Increase with Implementation of National Healthcare Reform

More than 75% of respondents predict paperwork either to increase or not improve, with healthcare reform; despite implementation of electronic health records, 80% of healthcare organizations still rely on paper records

WESTBOROUGH, MA  — March 20, 2012 —Anoto, the world leader in digital pen and paper technology, today announced the results of a survey focusing on the state of paperwork in the healthcare industry. Survey results confirm that despite the growing numbers of organizations implementing electronic health records (EHR) systems, many are not decreasing their reliance on paper-based processes.  For example, well over half of the respondents say that paper is still a primary source for tracking information within their organizations’ daily activities, citing reasons such as:

  • Paper is too embedded in the culture;
  • Technology adoption is too expensive; and
  • Switching to an electronic system requires too much training and would disrupt care delivery.

Additionally, survey respondents predict that the paperwork burden will increase with the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).

Some of the other key findings from the survey include:

Paperwork is King:

  • 63% of respondents said they spend anywhere from 25% to more than 75% of their time at work drafting or processing paperwork.
  • A significant majority – almost 80% – are still using paper records, despite either having or currently implementing an EHR system.
  • 78% of respondents believe the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) will either increase the amount of paperwork they will have to deal with or it will, at best, stay the same.

EHR Technology Improves Patient Care:

  • As healthcare continues to move towards EHR adoption, there is consensus that ultimately this technology will benefit the industry, patients and the quality of patient care in the long-term. Almost 90% of survey respondents with an active EHR system believe an EHR system improves patient care.

Interest in Digitizing Paper-Based Processes is High:

  • Respondents were asked (on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest), if they would be interested in using a solution that would allow them to digitize information instantly while still using the paper forms they have always used. Nearly 50% of respondents rated their interest as an 8 or higher.

“The survey results are clear: healthcare remains a paper-driven industry and will likely stay that way for the foreseeable future,” said Pietro Parravicini, senior vice president area manager Americas for Anoto.

About the Survey

Anoto conducted an online survey, with responses from professionals at healthcare organizations of various sizes. The survey, conducted in January 2012, included responses from physicians, nurses, executive/administrative, IT professionals and CIOs from hospitals (including emergency rooms), ambulatory care facilities, home healthcare organizations, and long-term care facilities. Questions focused on the circumstances where paper is being used and methods currently being employed to get information digitized and into EHR systems.

About Anoto Group

Anoto Group is the world leader in digital pen and paper technology enabling fast and reliable conversion of handwritten text into digital format. Anoto operates through a global partner network that focuses on user-friendly forms solutions for efficient capture, transmission and storage of data within different business segments, e.g. healthcare, bank and finance, transport and logistics and education.
