Guadalupe County Hospital Achieves HIMSS Analytics Stage 6 Status

Rural New Mexico hospital uses Medsphere’s affordable open source electronic health record to meet exacting patient care and process improvement standards

Santa Rosa, NM, and Carlsbad, CA—January 23, 2013—Medsphere Systems Corporation today congratulated customer and partner Guadalupe County Hospital on becoming a Health Information Management and Systems Society (HIMSS) Analytics Stage 6 hospital.

The second highest level of the HIMSS Analytics’ Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM), Stage 6 requirements include the demonstrated use of electronic physician documentation, clinical decision support, computerized provider order entry and closed-loop medication administration, among other clinical support tools.
The designation puts Guadalupe in an elite minority; only about 8.5 percent of American hospitals have qualified for HIMSS Analytics Stage 6, according to the organization.  As one of the smallest Stage 6 hospitals, Guadalupe is representative of thousands of similar healthcare facilities nationwide that live close to the financial margins and still manage to provide crucial local healthcare services.

“I want to offer our most sincere congratulations to hospital CEO Christina Campos and her staff for meeting Stage 6 requirements. They are the ones that made this happen,” said Medsphere President and CEO Irv Lichtenwald. “When you consider the size, location and resource constraints Guadalupe is working with, this is certainly a significant accomplishment. It’s also a testament to the fact that technology-enabled improvements in patient care are available to just about any hospital with the necessary will and vision.”

Before and since going live with Medsphere’s OpenVista electronic health record (EHR) in June of last year, Guadalupe and Medsphere have actively collaborated on several training, workflow redesign and clinical transformation initiatives. Through these efforts, Guadalupe qualified for federal Meaningful Use Stage 1 funds in November.
“HIMSS Analytics Stage 6 status is external validation of the tremendous work the clinicians and staff have done here at Guadalupe,” said Campos. “I would be no less proud of the commitment they’ve made without it, but I appreciate confirmation of improvements in patient care and a more efficient workplace. Our partnership with Medsphere is just that, and it has created better healthcare for our patients at a cost we can afford, which is saying something, really.”
Guadalupe follows in the footsteps of Medsphere customer and partner Midland Memorial Hospital. Midland was one of the first 11 hospitals in the United States to meet HIMSS Analytics Stage 6 requirements, doing so for roughly one-third the average cost of the other 10 hospitals and in about half the average time.

About Guadalupe County Hospital
Guadalupe County Hospital is a general medical facility providing adult and pediatric care. With a full-time staff of 45, including administrative staff, this 10-bed acute care hospital handles roughly 250 admissions and 2,500 emergency room visits per year. Located in Santa Rosa, N.M., 117 miles east of Albuquerque on Interstate 40, Guadalupe serves the entire county of fewer than 4700 people.

About Medsphere and OpenVista

This VistA EHR is widely credited with helping transform the VA into the nation’s most efficient and clinically effective healthcare organization. OpenVista, the most fully commercialized VistA offspring, is a responsible reapplication of the VA’s $8.5 billion investment, which recent studies show have yielded $3.09 billion in benefits, primarily from the near elimination of medication administration issues and duplicate testing.
Medsphere’s subscription-based pricing model enables hospital, clinic and integrated delivery network customers to pay for OpenVista from their operating budget with no upfront costs or back-end balloon payments. Expert implementation and other services facilitate fluid and rapid transition to a paperless clinical environment focusing on best practices and evidence-based medicine in six to nine months. IHE North American Connectathon and Conference 2013 Brings New Features to the Testing Floor

CHICAGO – (January 24, 2013) – The IHE North American (NA) Connectathon and Conference has been deemed the “Lollapalooza of the Health IT” world. Each year, 500 of the industry’s top engineers gather in Chicago for the largest interoperability testing event in the U.S. The Connectathon, which is the health IT industry’s only large-scale face-to-face testing event, will take place Jan. 28-Feb. 2, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago at 151 E. Wacker Drive.

The interoperability testing event boasts 100 vendors and 160 test systems, demonstrating powerful advancements in health IT. Vendor testing registration is closed, but attendees can still register for the IHE NA Connectathon Conference 2013 and obtain a sneak peak of the testing floor on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

Visit the HIMSS Blog to hear what participants have to say about the Connectathon and Conference.

The IHE NA Connectathon Conference, a one day educational event, on Jan.30, provides industry professionals with continuing education and networking opportunities. Educational sessions will focus on how technology and IHE are enabling the achievement and sustainability of meaningful use in health IT. View the full agenda and list of education sessions. Additionally, a backstage pass and access to the Connectathon testing floor for a private tour is available to attendees; the testing floor is otherwise closed to the public. Tours will include an insider’s view of the testing environment, infrastructure, tools, and new testing services.

This year, three new features have been added to the lineup, including testing of HL7’s Consolidated CDA, IHE USA’s new Pilot Certification program in partnership with ICSA Labs, plus the first mHealth Hack-A-Thon.

IHE is organized by clinical and operational domains with eight IHE International Domainsavailable for testing at the event. In each domain, users with clinical and operational experience identify integration and information sharing priorities and vendors of relevant information systems develop consensus, standards-based solutions to address them.

The HL7 Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) is a document markup standard that specifies the structure and semantics of “clinical documents” for the purpose of exchange. Now, for testing at the Connectathon, the HL7 Consolidated CDA (C-CDA) offers a combined library of CDA templates and common document types, from progress notes to discharge summaries and more. C- CDA is now stipulated in Standards and Certification Criteria of Meaningful Use Stage 2. This national recognition positions C-CDA, for widespread adoption within EHR systems, thus advancing interoperability leading to information exchange, with a specific focus on care coordination.

Introduced in 1999, the IHE Connectathon has continued as an annual event with continued growth in the level and scope of participation. A parallel event in Europe was established in 2001 and has followed a similar trajectory. The next IHE Europe Connectathon will be held April 15-19, in Istanbul, Turkey. Connectathons have also been held in Australia, China, Japan and Korea.

IHE Connectathons are professionally managed and independently monitored testing events. A technical project management team develops detailed test plans for each role being tested at the Connectathon and organizes the process to maximize interoperability testing between corresponding systems from different vendors. Independent monitors observe and record test results, which are published in the Connectathon results database.

“IHE USA and ICSA Labs share the goal of accelerating the adoption of usable, secure, and interoperable health information technology to further the goal of improving patient safety and delivering higher quality of care. To that end, these organizations have formed a collaborative partnership to advance the state of the industry through the IHE USA Certification Pilot Program,” says Joyce Sensmeier, RN-BC, MS, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, FAAN, Vice President, Informatics, HIMSS. “This new program will be held in conjunction with the Connectathon, whose primary purpose is to address specific health IT interoperability issues. By testing the interoperability of their health IT systems, participants are able to improve the acquisition, management and communication of vital health information, while supporting efficient provider workflows and protecting private health information.”

IHE interoperability solutions are implemented in hundreds of products and in care sites around the world.
