PriMed Selects NextGate EMPI to Support Coordination, Quality, and Safety by Ensuring Consistent and Complete Patient Records for Flagship Client

Management Services Organization Brings Together Data of 300,000 Patients from 3,700 Providers Across Multiple Specialties and Locations for Hill Physicians Medical Group

MONROVIA, Calif. — January 8, 2013 — NextGate, a leading provider of Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) and registry solutions, today announced that PriMed Management Consulting Services, Inc., the management services organization (MSO) for Hill Physicians Medical Group (HPMG), will implement NextGate’s enterprise master patient index (EMPI) software as the foundation for a broad-based Care Management platform to support Hill Physicians’ 3,700 providers. This solution is designed to link patient records across all phases of the care process, as well as ensure the accuracy and completeness of patient data for one of the nation’s largest physicians groups.

PriMed will use NextGate’s sophisticated registry platform to identify, index, and link patient records from Centricity (IDX), NextGen EHR, Dignity Health, UCSF, and multiple health plans and laboratories into a consolidated, consistent and centralized EMPI.

“An efficient MSO must provide reliable and accurate patient information in order to improve physician adoption, increase clinical collaboration, and avoid unnecessary administrative expenses.  Access to organized and consistent patient information, regardless of practice location or vendor system, empowers our member physicians and participating organizations,” said PriMed’s Chief Information Officer, Craig Lanway. “NextGate supported an earlier project of ours, and their knowledge, expertise, and technology for patient identity management is best in class.”

“As the MSO for one of the largest physician groups in the country, PriMed faces the same challenges we see in ACOs, HIEs and integrated delivery system operations.” stated Andy Aroditis, President and CEO, NextGate. “As the healthcare landscape becomes increasingly digital and interconnected, maintaining an accurate view of the same patient across disparate systems is critical. The complexities of the relationships we need to understand and map require a more sophisticated approach to identity management than ever before. We see this shift reflected in increasing demand for our platform, and we are pleased to help organizations like PriMed maintain the infrastructure required for today’s healthcare integration needs.”

NextGate EMPI uses intelligent matching algorithms to recognize related entities spread across different applications and locations, and links them together under an Enterprise ID in a comprehensive master index, enabling a secure and accurate exchange of patient information.

Providers Rethink Health Information Management Strategy in Face of Brewing ICD-10 Storm

Regulatory requirements and ICD-10 changes challenge current go-forward strategies

Orem, Utah – January 8, 2013 - Providers tell KLAS they are reassessing their go-forward health information management (HIM) strategies accompanying ICD-10 to address new challenges around organizational consolidation or expansion, EMRs, and other HIM technology implementations. This and other insights can be found in a new KLAS report entitled HIM Services 2012: Helping to Weather the Storm.

“The monumental shift to ICD-10 has providers worried about keeping up with regulatory requirements, obtaining and retaining the right staff, and handling the fluctuation in volumes and productivity that they predict will occur,” said Graham Triggs, research director. “As volumes increase with 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day for the next 18 years, the need for adequate, qualified, and trained staff becomes clear.”

Biggest HIM Department Challenge

To address these staffing and other HIM challenges, some providers are looking to third-party assistance to outsource transcription (MTSO), coding, scanning, or release of information. Providers looking to alleviate ICD-10 coding concerns are also considering computer-assisted coding (CAC) and clinical documentation improvement technology, which are also discussed in depth in this report.

A major focus of this report is a detailed discussion of the turnaround times, report quality, account management, and administrative tools of MTSO firms. Providers have also identified clear distinctions as they examine what firms offer in expertise and tools and their track records of client satisfaction.

Precyse and TransTech top the satisfaction rankings, but more comprehensive offerings by larger firms Nuance and M*Modal continue to dominate market share. Among reasons discussed in the report for Precyse’s and TransTech’s scores are their unique HIM offerings. Precyse offers clients transcription and coding services, a CAC product, and the ability to fully outsource the HIM department. TransTech is onshore only but still delivers consistent report quality and fast turnaround times as well as offering a unique service for radiologists. The key reasons behind Nuance’s and M*Modal’s offerings and market share dominance are discussed at length as well.

Other fully rated MTSO firms include Accentus, Acusis, Nuance (Transcend), and Superior Global. Early data and component firms include Amphion, FutureNet, Keystrokes, MedScribe, M*Modal, NEMT, PJ&A, StenTel, and Transdyne. Findings about Alpha Systems for scanning services and about Healthport and MRO Corp for release of information are also discussed.

Teladoc Aligns with HealthSpot to Form Strategic Partnership to Advance Telehealth Access

(LAS VEGAS) Jan. 9, 2013 at 8 a.m. EST -  Teladoc, the nation’s first and largest telehealth provider, today announced an agreement in principal on a new strategic partnership with HealthSpot, a pioneer in patient and provider driven health care technology. The initiative will enhance Teladoc’s current solution with the ability to offer an on-site option through HealthSpot’s cutting-edge telehealth system that provides medical diagnostic technology in a private, walk-in kiosk: the HealthSpot™ Station.

“Teladoc’s focus is on providing options for customers to access non-emergency, primary care and HealthSpot is a great complement to our current suite of solutions,” said Jason Gorevic. “Patients’ lives have become increasingly busy and the HealthSpot Station provides our members with one more choice in how they interact with a physician – via a physical kiosk, along with our current telephone or secure video options. This offering will accelerate our vision of transforming health care by providing patients with access to affordable, high-quality care when, where, and how they want.”

This partnership, reached in principal and subject to negotiating and executing a definitive agreement, will expand Teladoc’s current telehealth solution with another access point of care for employers, health plans, health systems and patients. For clients interested in adding this component to their telehealth solution, Teladoc will offer the HealthSpot Station, an 8-foot by 5-foot, ADA accessible, fully-enclosed kiosk furnished with a touch screen, audio system, and a two-way high-definition screen that includes multiple high-tech, digital biometric devices that transmits information to doctors through a secured HIPAA-compliant connection. “Partnering with Teladoc has proven invaluable to furthering HealthSpot’s mission,” said Steve Cashman, founder and CEO of HealthSpot. “With the HealthSpot Station adding a new platform for Teladoc’s vast network of state licensed, board-certified providers, we are able to extend the reach of care to patients who cannot access the care they require in a timely fashion. This creates an incredible opportunity by presenting an innovative solution to combat barriers to broad adoption of telehealth.”

HIMSS Analytics Honors Florida Hospital North Pinellas with Stage 7 Award

CHICAGO (January 3, 2013) – HIMSS Analytics recognizes Florida Hospital North Pinellas, an Adventist Health System facility in Tarpon Spring, Fla., with its Stage 7 Award. The award represents attainment of the highest level on the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM)?, which is used to track EMR progress at hospitals and health systems.

HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database. There are eight stages (0-7) that measure a hospital’s implementation and use of information technology applications. The final stage, Stage 7, represents an advanced patient record environment. The validation process to confirm a hospital has reached Stage 7 includes a site visit by an executive from HIMSS Analytics and former or current chief information officers to ensure an unbiased evaluation of the Stage 7 environments.

“Adventist Health System, through Florida Hospital North Pinellas, is leading the way in electronic medical records adoption thanks to our skilled physicians and staff,” said Bruce Bergherm, Florida Hospital North Pinellas CEO. “Locally, it takes a significant amount of time and manpower to ensure we are using the systems appropriately, something that would have been even more challenging without the support and leadership from Adventist Health System. Becoming only the second hospital in Florida to accomplish this high level of technological integration and advancement demonstrates our dedication to offering the highest quality and safest care to our patients.”

“This hospital has come a long way in a very short time, after implementing 85 different systems in February 2012.  It is obvious to me that all staff was behind the transition to an EMR and see the value in its use,” says John P. Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, Executive Vice President, HIMSS Analytics. “As of Quarter 3, 2012, Florida Hospital North Pinellas is among the 103 U.S. facilities, or 1.9 percent, of the more than 5,000 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics® Database, to be awarded the HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Award.”

Florida Hospital North Pinellas will be recognized at the 2013 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans, La., on March 3-7, 2013. Visit the HIMSS Analytics website for more information on the Stage 7 award.

LEXMARK ACQUIRES ACUO TECHNOLOGIES

  • Acuo Technologies is a leader in the vendor neutral archive software segment that resides within the high growth enterprise clinical management software and services market for the medical imaging industry
  • Lexmark’s Perceptive Software becomes the only vendor to own this technology and offer a solution that drives better patient care, an enhanced clinician experience and cost savings through a single, enterprise-wide and content-based medical record that is accessible via any electronic medical record (EMR) system
  • Acquisition continues to showcase Lexmark’s transition to being a key solutions provider to enterprise-sized businesses and organizations across the globe
  • Represents continuation of Lexmark’s stated capital allocation framework

LEXINGTON, Ky., Jan. 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ – Lexmark International, Inc. (NYSE: LXK) today announced the acquisition of Acuo Technologies, LLC, a recognized leader in high performance software and services for clinical content management, data migration and vendor neutral archives (VNA), for a cash purchase price of approximately $45 million. Acuo Technologies will become a part of Perceptive Software, a Lexmark company.

Acuo Technologies, when combined with Lexmark’s Perceptive Software healthcare software solutions, will enable customers to deploy a single, enterprise-wide access platform for clinical content via any electronic medical record (EMR) system.

Acuo Technologies’ Universal Clinical Platform (UCP) is a vendor neutral foundation that drives better care delivery through a patient-centric approach by consolidating medical images.

Acuo Technologies’ offerings include a single integration point for all medical imaging assets, lowering costs and risks through the UCP’s ability to work with different systems – enabling flexibility and efficiency across users and departments.

Many national governments, university medical centers, and urban and regional acute care centers and companies use Acuo Technologies’ software and services, primarily in North America and Europe.

Together, Perceptive Software and Acuo Technologies will offer a unique set of technologies to the healthcare sector—enterprise content management (ECM), VNA with clinical content viewing, and database conversion—that combine to manage the entire range of content within the healthcare enterprise. With this acquisition, Perceptive Software becomes the only vendor to own this technology in order to provide this powerful healthcare solution, driving better patient care, an enhanced clinician experience and cost savings through a single, enterprise-wide and content-based medical record that is accessible via any EMR system.

Lexmark retains a strong liquidity position with a long history of cash generation.

This acquisition illustrates Lexmark’s consistent execution of the company’s stated capital allocation framework. Lexmark’s capital allocation framework is to pursue acquisitions that support growth and increase software and solutions capabilities, while returning more than 50 percent of free cash flow to shareholders, on average, through quarterly dividends and share repurchases. Since mid-2011, Lexmark has returned to shareholders more than $500 million in the form of dividends and share repurchases.

Supporting Quotes:

“With the acquisition of Acuo Technologies, Lexmark is further strengthening and differentiating our industry-leading healthcare offerings as the healthcare IT market continues to expand at a rapid pace,” said Paul Rooke, Lexmark’s chairman and chief executive officer. “The four acquisitions we’ve completed in 2012 showcase Lexmark’s transition to being a key solutions provider to enterprise-sized businesses and organizations across the globe.”

“Perceptive Software’s rich process and content solution combined with Acuo Technologies’ Universal Clinical Platform will provide users a single, enterprise-wide view of all patient medical information from within the EMR system,” said Scott Coons, Perceptive Software president and chief executive officer and Lexmark vice president. “Physicians will have immediate access to all patient information—from prescriptions to x-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans and more—from directly within the EMR, regardless of the department in which it was conducted or the technology used to create and store it.

“This data is then presented in the context of the patient, so when the physician pulls up a patient record in the EMR, all clinical content living outside that record is presented,” added Coons. “This immediate, broad view of the patient drives both efficiencies and better patient care. Presenting this powerful content-based medical record in one solution will be unique to the market.”

“Combining Acuo Technologies’ clinical content solutions with Perceptive Software’s content and process expertise allows us to offer healthcare customers more compelling end-to-end solutions that integrate and manage both medical image and document-centric patient information, all integrated with the EMR,” said Jeff Timbrook, Acuo Technologies chief executive officer. “We look forward to presenting this broad offering to existing Acuo Technologies, Perceptive Software and Lexmark healthcare customers.”

HIMSS Analytics Honors Texas Health Alliance with Stage 7 Award

CHICAGO (December 20, 2012) – HIMSS Analytics recognizes Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Alliance (Texas Health Alliance), in Fort Worth, Texas, with its Stage 7 Award.

Texas Health Alliance is a 50-bed, multi-service hospital offering acute care and wellness services to residents of North Fort Worth. The hospital, which opened in September this year, is part of the faith-based, nonprofit Texas Health Resources health care system. The hospital’s services include emergency medicine, women and infant services, neonatal intensive care, imaging, physical therapy, surgery, cardiac rehabilitation, occupational health, and wellness programs. Texas Health Alliance opened with a fully integrated electronic health record and computerized physician order entry, as well as many other innovative uses of technology to facilitate patient care delivery and care management by providers and clinicians.

“Being designated as a Stage 7 facility validates the commitment and dedication our care teams have to utilizing technology for improved patient safety, care coordination and ease of use for our caregivers.  It is also recognition for the entire Texas Health Resources family as we showcase the outcomes we have been able to achieve across the enterprise as part of our EHR journey,” says  Winjie Tang Miao, president of Texas Health Alliance.

“Texas Health Alliance has demonstrated all of the necessary EMR capabilities to achieve the Stage 7 Award recognition. The use of standardized content from the Texas Health Resources enterprise, gleaned from years of experience across all Texas Health hospitals, resulted in the rapid clinician adoption of the EHR in this brand new hospital facility. Texas Health Alliance demonstrated over 95 percent utilization of CPOE, driven predominately by well-designed order set content, along with advanced clinical decision support alerts that support best practice protocols,” says John P. Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, Executive Vice President, HIMSS Analytics. “Texas Health Alliance also demonstrated the use of an enterprise data warehouse environment that is used to monitor and manage best practice alerts as well as core measures as well as a high level of patient safety with its closed loop medication administration environment. Texas Health Alliance serves as a great role model for other U.S. hospitals to emulate for improving patient care, safety, and quality.”

As of Quarter 3, 2012, Texas Health Alliance is among the 103 U.S. facilities, or 1.9 percent, of the more than 5,000 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics® Database, to be awarded the HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Award.

The hospital will be recognized at the 2013 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans, La., on March 3-7, 2013. Visit theHIMSS Analytics website for more information on the Stage 7 award.

GE Healthcare Announces Centricity Practice Solution 11

New Ambulatory EMR Offering Simplifies ICD-10 Readiness with One-click Problem Entry and Mapping to ICD-9 Codes

BARRINGTON, Ill. – Jan 24, 2013 – GE Healthcare today announced the release of Centricity* Practice Solution 11, the next generation of its fully integrated EMR and Practice Management solution.   With a dynamic search engine and one-click problem entry, Centricity Practice Solution simplifies the data entry required for medical providers to comply with new the ICD-10 coding requirements and reduces the number of clicks required to enter a problem by 75%.  Combined with the ability to customize workflows, this new solution will help ambulatory practices adjust to healthcare reform and embrace new care models.

With the mandatory transition to ICD-10 codes in October 2014, US providers face a daunting challenge.  While the new coding system has many benefits, including measuring the quality, safety and efficacy of care, it multiplies the ICD-9 dataset by a factor of five and will require a significant amount of training and effort for providers to successfully navigate. With today’s release of Centricity Practice Solution 11, GE Healthcare helps ease the transition to ICD-10 for its customers.

“I’m impressed with the mapping functionality between ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes,” said Dr. Jay Prakash from South Atlanta Medical Clinic. “When our practice has to go through the coding transition next year, the bulk of the learning curve will already be behind us. We are already making use of the one-click problem entry and the search functionality is exceptional.”

Both ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes come pre-loaded in the patient chart, and are delivered through a dynamic search engine, enabling providers to efficiently assign the diagnosis code. Additionally, the search engine uses an algorithm to both predict common search terms and map ICD-9 codes to ICD-10 codes using guidance from CMS where there is a one-to-one correlation, so providers can see the links between the two systems. Problem codes are fully searchable and, once the provider selects the appropriate diagnosis, correlating codes are automatically mapped to both ICD-9 and ICD-10,where there is a one-to-one match.

“The transition to ICD-10 represents one of the most significant changes to clinical documentation since EHR adoption.   Providers that don’t manage the transition well will face high levels of denied claims, delayed payments, inconvenience to patients and potentially legal exposure in the event that improper coding is audited,” said Judy Hanover, research director with IDC Health Insights. “Products that help ease the pain of the transition should do very well in this market.”

Robust features enable providers to spend more time with patients

Centricity Practice Solution offers enhancements in three key areas that help to improve clinical and financial productivity for ambulatory practices:

  • Customizable: Centricity Practice Solution offers flexible workflows that providers can configure to mirror how their specific practice operates, thus reducing the amount of time spent on data entry. Additionally, CPS allows exceptional customization and decision support tools that enable  efficient patient encounters.
  • Progressive: In addition to the predictive search engine and one-click problem entry, Centricity Practice Solution includes a portfolio of pre-built reports and access to GE’s database of nearly 30 million de-identified patient records, so that providers can gather information to prepare to attest for Meaningful Use, benchmark clinical outcomes and adopt new care models like Patient Centered Medical Home.
  • Interoperable: Centricity Practice Solution is available as a fully-integrated EMR/PM package, or either module can be configured to operate as a standalone solution. Centricity Practice Solution also has the built-in tools and forms that enable it to connect to virtually any hospital EMR or revenue cycle system, thus enabling providers to share data with multiple delivery networks in order to offer more coordinated, data-driven care.

“Centricity Practice Solution gives our customers a leg up on transitioning to ICD-10 coding standards,” said Mike Friguletto, vice president and general manager of GE Healthcare IT.  “Our customers that choose to upgrade will be thrilled with the one-click problem entry and ability to continue to customize workflows. It’s truly a game-changer.”
