HIMSS Analytics Recognizes Truman Medical Center with Stage 7 Award

HIMSS Analytics recognizes Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., with its Stage 7 Award. The Stage 7 award represents attainment of the highest level on the Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM), which is used to track EMR progress at hospitals and health systems.

“TMC has been consistently ahead of the curve, not just for safety nets, but all hospitals, when it comes to investing in the implementation of an electronic medical record system; Stage 7 status is a highlight of our process’ advancement. This is an effort that would have not been possible without the continued support of our medical staff and board leadership,” said TMC President/CEO John W. Bluford. “While the electronic medical record system helps us to provide top quality care with state-of-the-art technology, and at the same time improve the efficiency of our clinical staff, the most important achievement has been the demonstrable increase in patient safety and quality outcomes.”

HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database. There are eight stages (0-7) that measure a hospital’s implementation and utilization of information technology applications. The final stage, Stage 7, represents an advanced patient record environment. The validation process to confirm a hospital has reached Stage 7 includes a site visit by an executive from HIMSS Analytics and former or current chief information officers to ensure an unbiased evaluation of the Stage 7 environments.

More than 104,000 patients are cared for at TMC each year, making up more than 20,000 admissions, 320,000 outpatient visits and more than 100,000 emergency department visits. TMC is dedicated to being a state-of-the-art,  top quality organization and has been named Most Wired in Healthcare by Hospitals and Health Networks Magazine for two consecutive years.  As a designated Level III Patient-Centered Medical Home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, TMC cares for more than 60,000 chronically ill patients each year. Chronic disease management is at the heart of TMC’s specialty services.

Truman Medical Center will be recognized at the 2013 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans, La. on March 3-7, 2013. As of Quarter 2, 2012, TMC Hospital Hill and TMC Lakewood are among the 95 U.S. facilities, or 1.7 percent, of the more than 5,000 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics® Database, to be awarded the HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Award.

“The board and executive management at Truman Medical Center have developed a strong corporate drive to optimize investment in IT to improve quality and efficiency.” says John P. Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, Executive Vice President, HIMSS Analytics. “Truman Medical Center also has a commendably aggressive program to eliminate paper, as physicians electronically document history and physicals, progress notes, consultation notes, discharge summaries and provider documentation in the Emergency Department.”
